Yeah, I think it's pretty pathetic too. I'm a big fan of Pride and Prejudice and when I mentioned that to a friend, she told me I'd be bound to love Jane Eyre more.

...no. No I did not. It's like the unholy father of all romantic cliches ugh.

I do love the comics Kate Beaton made of the Brontë Sisters. Their magasine of choice is called "BROODING HUNX". :D

Yes! Her Jane Eyre comics are hilarious (can't find them on her site, but they're in her book).

"It's my wife. I locked her in the attic, I was pretty sick of her, I'm sorry I never said. ...She's nuts also."

My love behaved
A bit erratic
Our nuptial day
Brought truth dramatic
He had a wife--
Mad, in an attic!

And I love how Kate Beaton's Anne is all frustrated with her sisters because of it. . .

I don't like Austen much, but her heroines are at least, well, heroines. They have agency, flaws, personality, and wants and needs outside the plot. Austen doesn't float my boat (not a big romance fan, to be honest, and I dislike her writing style) but I can at least see the appeal. Jane Eyre, on the other hand... unholy father of romantic cliches is right. It's like Twilight, but more boring and without the romantic hero even trying to be a decent human being.

... yeah. I think your friend means well, but she has no idea what she's talking about. One book is funny and witty and celebrates a smart heroine who finds out that the guy she thought was a dick wasn't, the other is about a passive heroine who falls in love with a jerk, discovers he's a gigantic jerk, liar and bigamist and instead of dumping his crazy lying ass, she marries him anyway.

Haha, there used to be a very funny post by Sarah Rees Brennan about Rochester, Heathcliff and Darcy on a talkshow or something being asked about their worst faults, and it's something like

HOST: What would you describe as your greatest flaw?
ROCHESTER: I entrapped my 18-year-old employee into a bigamous marriage and keep my first wife locked in the attic.
HEATHCLIFF: I hang puppies and abuse my family.
DARCY: …I can be a little judgmental and aloof at parties?

Not the same thing.

Haha, that's precious. That's a great, simple way of look at it.
