Re: Man of Steel - Mild Spoilers

I'm the opposite.
I did love the action and the special effect. The flying in particular felt really satisfying. The story was also pretty boss.

Where is lost me was in it's personality. Superman had almost no personality. He brooded far too much. Where's the slightly goofy boy scout? The scene where he let himself get taken in by the army was about as close as it got, and that was FAR to short, everything else seemed like 'Superman by Michael Bay after he got done watching batman begins.'

I will say this: Russell Crow was spectacular. His scenes, along with the very, very good action, vastly improved the film.

I watched the first ever superman movie recently, so maybe MOS suffered by being unfavourably compared to that.

Case in point, the bit in the first movie where Clark comes to Lois's apartment after she's just went off for that flight with superman, and he takes off his glasses, then thinks 'Screw it I'm gonna tell her' There's an appreciable difference between his 'Clark' face, and stance, and whole demeanour and his superman. Like a switch was hit, and BOOM Superman in Clarks clothes. Now compare that to the end of the film where glasses!clark shows up. There's no difference. He is still just superman in Clarks clothes even when he's trying to be Clark.

It's possibly been 10 years or more since I saw that movie, but I do indeed remember the scene you're talking about. Christopher Reeve is the only one I can recall who really pulled off that whole change in demeanour. (Haven't seen the new film yet, tho.)

Agreed. I didn't want to compare him to Reeve, I really didn't, I wanted him to do well on his own merits, but to be honest, yeah, no-ones done the Superman/Clark thing better.

I'm probably seeming very down on the film, but I DID like it, It just felt a bit... empty in the characterization of supes. Definitly go and see it. Lois is great, Jor El is fantastic, the action and special effects are spot on (The oil rig right at the start is so simple and so whoa), and they obviously have something planned to make a very impressive sequel. I just hope Cavill and Snyder can get superman to feel more like superman by the time that comes around.

Even more spoilers

Well, it's easy to see why we didn't get much of the goofy boy scout: he just wasn't there for much of the movie. It's bisected into what seem like 2 different films. The first half is taken up by the origin mythology and Clark's existential dilemma, which I enjoyed because it made sense for him to feel this way while searching for his purpose in life. The moment he's found it, though, we're shoved into the bombastic Zod conflict, and while a more deft director could definitely have injected some personality into the character here... we have Zack Snyder (I was surprised the first half managed to be as subdued and character-driven as it was with him at the helm). That army bit was literally the last-and-only scene with angst-free Superman before that solid hour block of action set pieces.

I liked Crowe too, and I also thought Kevin Costner and Diane Lane were fantastic in their roles. Generally I was satisfied with the acting, everyone performed well with what they were given and can be much better with more substantial material -- which is what I'm hoping we'll get in the sequel, more character development. This worked as an origin movie, setting up for greater things to come.

I do get that there wasn't much room to show superman's personality without cheapening the story, it was a pretty high stakes fight from the moment he meets Zod onwards, but yeah it's like you say a better director.

I am totally looking forward to the sequel, though. This did feel like X-men, in that it was all build up to X2.
Oh, BTW, I'm officially calling it, The sequel will be about Lex Luthor calling out 'The Alien' on his actions during the first film, They spent way too much time focusing on the massive destruction during the big fights for that not to come into play. Also, I expect there will be a video broadcast of Supes Snapping Zods neck (Like Wonder Woman snapping that dudes neck) with the jist being "We can't trust him. If he does this to his own kind, what could he do etc etc".

How did you feel about that, btw? I think I'm more impressed that they had the balls to have superman break "the big rule" right out the gate, than I am outraged that they changed something.

I was totally fine with him offing Zod, especially because they portrayed it as a really devastating decision for Supes. For all we know, this could be the very reason he has "the big rule" in this incarnation to begin with, it would definitely make sense. (People also point out that he's killed Zod before in the comics and in Superman II.)

Oooh, I really like your prediction about Luthor playing a villain with good publicity. I love it when films deal with conflicting public perceptions of superheroes, and manipulating that would be just the kind of thing Lex would do. No more real estate scams.
