Everyone's hormone responses are different

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
But if you will take inspiration from a personal story:
I had horrific dysmenorrhea as a teen. It was like having the flu--nausea, cramps so bad i wouldn't be able to sit up, headaches, even fevers sometimes, and heavy bleeding for a week. Then I went on BC. We went through a few to find one that was good, as there are many different variations. Some have more side effects than others.

It was like magic. The first month it was a little better. The second even more so, and 6 month later I had a single day of misery and nothing else. After a year that was down to a few hours of cramps one day a month. There were a few side effects at first, but they all went away after month two. And I don't smoke or have high blood pressure, so the risks are pretty small for anything else.
I stayed on BC for 10 years solid, then off for laziness (and lack of sex) just to see--and the problems took 3 years to return, so I went back on (the ring now, less hassle). Haven't had any issues with the long term, nor has my doctor.
Now, everyone responds differently to hormones, but until you try it you don't know how you will react, including if you will have any side effects at all. I know plenty of people who have none; I know several who can't take any hormonal BC at all. Some people can only take certain kinds. But try anyway, because if it works it is life changing.

I just want to chime in that this was my case as well. I had cramps so severe and so painful that I had seizures from them. Then I went on birth control, and now, I might have an hour of cramps the entire week, and they're nothing like they were. More like "ugh go away" than "I think I'm going to die". Short of a hysterectomy, it's the best thing I could have done.
