Re: Characters you don't want to admit you identify with

After those couple of secrets about people disliking Jane Eyre, I'm not sure I want to admit that one of the reasons I love that book is because I really identify with Jane. She's been called self-righteous and a doormat and all kinds of things, and sure, I will agree about the self-righteousness, but honestly? To me, the important aspects of her character (because, y'know, those are the ones I identify with) is her determination to find the kind of life she wants, her refusal to give in to something she knows she cannot live with (I will forever love the "I am no bird" exchange) - hell, I find her melodramatic and I love it, because I identify with that too. I aspire to have some of her generosity, her sassy attitude and her courage.

Basically I see her as a woman struggling with the cards she's been dealt in life, and finding a degree of freedom without that being at the cost of her dignity, plus at the same time finding a man who complements her (without going into an analysis of Rochester, I think that although he might be a douche, he compliments Jane's character so well).
