Characters you don't want to admit you identify with

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
What it says on the tin. There could be any reason you don't want to admit it. Maybe the character is a genius or super-rich, and you're afraid you'll look arrogant if you say you relate to them. Maybe the character is seriously disturbed and you don't want other people thinking you're disturbed too. Maybe the character did a horrible thing. Maybe you've heard other people bashing the character for traits to identify with and are afraid of how they'd react to you.

Make sure to explain to the rest us why you don't want to admit it!

(Bonus points to anyone who doesn't go anon to respond to this thread!)

Loki from the MCU.

Why I don't want to admit it: mainly the people who bash him. I mean, I KNOW he's a horrible person and I don't think he has any excuse and I certainly don't want to be like him - in fact, the reason I relate to him strongly is because of how badly I don't want to be like him, but if I say I relate to him, people will assume I'm some overprojecting woobifier.

I feel like I identify with Kaylee from Firefly a lot, but I feel like that's a character a lot of people want to identify with, and is kind of cliched.

Molly from Sherlock

it wouldn't be so bad if I didn't only relate to her for the reasons she's flawed.

Mostly just a lot of characters who are unhappy and / or lonely, because I don't like that I can empathize with that.

When I was younger.

Yes I appreciate how much of a prat young me was, at least I had the sense not to tell anyone.

When I was younger, Elle from Degrassi. Shy goth girl turned cutter with alcoholic parental issues. Yeah. I hate to admit it because it's so cliche, and it's Degrassi which I hardly admit that I used to watch let alone identify with anyone on the show.

(no account so no bonus points for me.)

More identifED with, past tense, when I was a kid. Not identify with right now. But, uh, Lisa Simpson and early-season Malcolm from Malcolm in the Middle.

The first reason you suggested pretty much sums up why I never admit this...>_>

I mean, no, I sure as hell can't do mathematical tricks with random credit card numbers, but I guess those kinds of exaggerations never get handwaved as "well, it was a story, you're still allowed to relate to them", even though people are allowed to relate to characters with other kinds of exaggerations like having incredibly dramatic childhoods or OTT trauma or being incredibly badass or heroic.

Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion. She is a horrible person, but she reminds me of myself (especially when I was a teenager).

Honestly? Spike. Because even when he was being 'good', he still didn't really care, was happy to see the 'white hats' take hits, and spoke his mind. I don't want people to *die*, but i find as i get older i have much less patience with anything like drama and really wish i could just sock some people through a wall and be done with it.

And i guess i don't actually mind admitting that all that much except for the bit where dear gods, i really don't care about 99% of the ridiculous drama-llama going on in some people's lives but, you know, telling them that would be such a fucking headache that i don't want to deal with.

Dean Winchester. He's really gross half the time, but I relate so much to his personal issues and his attempts to mask them with sex/alcohol/humor/etc.

Sherlock Holmes. In every incarnation I've ever seen/read. And it's neither the detective/genius part nor the drugs, but I self-project my own personality disorder onto him. Only admitted this to one person :U (though if you dig around in my personal internet space long enough, I've probably mentioned it publicly oops)

Hannibal. Not the cannibalism part, the part that makes him have no friends, but maybe want to have them... but instead of trying to form meaningful connections with them, he gaslights them and performs weird psychological experiments on them just to see what will happen.
In other words, I am a terrible person. But at least I know it, I don't think Hannibal does.

Mako. Because... the whole fandom hates him.

But maybe it'd be okay for me because I'm a girl.

Cesare Borgia. My mom loves my frustrating and immature sibling more (not that she doesn't love me, just that she sees me as needing less motherly love than him), and I'm under pressure to succeed whereas nothing is expected of my brother.

I keep waiting for my Micheletto. Then at least I could have good sex.

Every single character in Wonder Boys. I don't know wtf it is with that book, but it's like Chabon looked into my soul and crafted all the characters out of different parts of me.

After those couple of secrets about people disliking Jane Eyre, I'm not sure I want to admit that one of the reasons I love that book is because I really identify with Jane. She's been called self-righteous and a doormat and all kinds of things, and sure, I will agree about the self-righteousness, but honestly? To me, the important aspects of her character (because, y'know, those are the ones I identify with) is her determination to find the kind of life she wants, her refusal to give in to something she knows she cannot live with (I will forever love the "I am no bird" exchange) - hell, I find her melodramatic and I love it, because I identify with that too. I aspire to have some of her generosity, her sassy attitude and her courage.

Basically I see her as a woman struggling with the cards she's been dealt in life, and finding a degree of freedom without that being at the cost of her dignity, plus at the same time finding a man who complements her (without going into an analysis of Rochester, I think that although he might be a douche, he compliments Jane's character so well).

The white guy on Green Hornet (cannot for the life of me remember his name though). He is portrayed as a selfish brat and everyone I've ever watched that movie with disliked him, myself included. But I swear every other scene he had me thinking "oh my god I am exactly like this asshole"

katsa, and a certain overly popular character from a fandom small enough it would out me. for different reasons. i wont admit to either of them because both of them were in really shitty situations which sort of justifies them turning out the way they are and with how great my life has been in comparison id just look like a pretentious little shit. Also the fandom worships both, one because she's badass, the other because he's ~handsome~ and ~tragic~.

Early Naruto, when everyone hated or avoided him and he had no idea why, and everything he did to try to fix it backfired.

He had more luck fixing the problem than I did. I wish I could be so cheerful and determined.

Scarlett O'Hara. Everyone says she's a bitch or selfish or childish or whatever, which she definitely can be, but, honestly, I wouldn't have done anything differently in the book than she did. First of all, she's a young woman living in the pre- and post-Civil War South. If you think women have issues with women's rights now, imagine what it was like in ~1860. She had to get married even though she didn't want to and had kids even though she didn't want to. She was torn between listening to her stubborn, living-in-the-past neighbors and choosing to do what she thought was actually going to help her and her family. She had to bury both of her parents by the time she was eighteen, all the while caring for her sisters, her children, her husbands, her servants, as well as the government breathing down her neck to take the little money she had saved for food and clothes and medicine. She even killed a Yankee soldier when he broke into her house; she shot him in the head! She had stupid, worthless Melanie dragging her down all the time, and then Rhett Butler comes into the picture. She is literally willing to sell her body to him in order to keep her house. In the end, she ends up running her own lumber business and makes "friends" with the Carpetbaggers since they are the Northern folk with all the money to burn. She eventually marries Rhett and finally has a little bit of comfort in her life, except her childish want of Ashley--which Rhett already knew about--drives Rhett away from her after they buried the only child they had together. She did all of this before she was twenty-five! Holy shit, she's amazing. I'm completely willing to overlook her flaws in light of what she was able to accomplish pretty much on her own.

uhhh Aveline, from Dragon Age 2. Not that she's unpopular or unlikeable or anything, but the whole duty/super responsible reliable friend thing makes me realize how damn boring I must be, especially since I can't kick ass and look cool on the side.

Will Graham, for a bunch of reasons.

1.) My family has a history of pretty severe mental illness and I'm fairly certain I've inherited some of it. Sometimes I can't pass as normal and that's damn awkward.

2.) the #will graham tab is full of privileged tween angst overidentifying with Graham and I don't want to be mistaken as one,

3.) my physical health is decaying even while I'm getting into my career field, but I keep trying to ignore it and keep working, and watching Will's health issues and handling of it is eerily like mine.

4.) the not-so-romantic little coded pieces of the poor working class in Will Graham's character that I recognize and perk up and, and deflate bc they still get slammed in today's society.

5.) mirror neurons (thanks nbchannibal for this obscure neurological tidbit)-- Will uses his for empathy, I use mine to learn difficult languages way after the normal human capacity to learn new languages has dwindled.
