(Anonymous) 2013-06-16 01:07 am (UTC)(link)add in the hoyay, and that's why people see that as being wrapped up in romantic chemistry as much as friendship
i am a bitter, bitter queer and i know that sora will never be with riku, but as someone who doesn't default to boy + girl = first love & true love, it's hard for me to untangle their chemistry when sora's reactions to riku never fail to be powerful, while his relationship with kairi seems driven far more mechanically with less chemistry and development
but that's just my all too subjective take on it

(Anonymous) 2013-06-16 06:12 am (UTC)(link)I'm not saying that Sora doesn't canonically feel anything for Kairi, or that those feelings aren't meant to be strong. KH, as most mainstream media tends to be, is written with heteronormative norms firmly intact. To the writers, as with most writers, I'm sure there's no doubt nothing more than friendship exists between the two male friends to the point where it's not even a question.
What I am saying is that Sora's feelings for Kairi feel like they rest heavily on those norms I mentioned, and less on actual on-screen build-up. I don't mean to demean whatever meaning and happiness you take from it, but to me this tends to undermine the chemistry Sora has with Kairi because there isn't really much narrative energy behind it.
Riku's interactions with Sora on the other hand are basically a huge point for the first game, where Kairi spends most of her time as a comatose damsel in distress. Hence the comparison I made above in an attempt to explain what I and other people see between Riku and Sora, and why we might interpret that scene and the depth and nature of his emotions the way we do.
So yeah, the gaming industry (and 99% of everything squeenix has ever done and will do) does indeed cater to you and validates your het ship above everything else. Congrats, it's a party.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-16 09:59 am (UTC)(link)Anyway, it's either clear that you didn't actually read my comment (I don't blame you, it was long and boring), or I was hopelessly unclear. I don't particularly care which, but I just hope you're not trolling. Because if you are, that's a really petty ax to grind.
Re: da
(Anonymous) 2013-06-16 11:35 am (UTC)(link)Seriously, canonically there is nothing but friendship between them. No matter how hard you try to make it into something else, it will never happen.
It's delusional people like you that give the rest of us a bad name -_-
Re: da
(Anonymous) 2013-06-16 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)This isn't some essay about a shipping grudge. It's an explanation of why I at least continue to point to that moment as part of why I and other fans I've known feel that it can be interpreted as the culmination of a lot of different emotions between Sora and Riku, and why some of us don't feel that the writing successfully creates the same emotional charge between Sora and Kairi.
To clarify, I wasn't the anon who originally replied to sootyowl. My reply to the other anon wasn't even meant to contradict them, so much as explain why people might feel that way about Sora's reaction to Riku vs. what we get on-screen of him with Kairi.
Apparently I've failed in that.

Way to be melodramatic, self.
Re: da
not YOU anon, just questioning the OTHER anon who is so hell bent on convincing people that Riku/Sora is canon.
Re: da
(Anonymous) 2013-06-17 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)I wasn't the anon who made the assertion that Sora sobbing at Riku's feet was an objective, canon sign that he loved Riku more than Kairi (or that he loved Riku at all). I merely regretfully butted in.
Anyway, I re-read my second post and I can see now where it would seem like I was trying to argue with canon. That was definitely not my intent.
From the start of my interjection, I had just meant to talk about why a lot of people do find Sora's friendship with Riku more compelling than what he has in-game with Kairi, and how certain things about the canon do _subjectively_ contribute to it, along with why I think it's so common for people to still talk about the reunion scene like it's some romantic lock-in for Riku's "good end" or something. It was never meant to prove or even imply the ship was actually canon in any sense of the word. Just that there's a lot you can reasonably draw from canon for it, without desperate misinterpretation and misunderstanding--even though some people get carried away.
It's all pretty stupid, I realize. But it's why I got defensive when the other anon came along and acted like I was saying "NO, SORA AND RIKU ARE CANON, THE BEACH SCENE IS PROOF, XION LIED!" because I really don't think anything I said the first time around came close to implying anything like that.
Well, whatever. Sorry for the miscommunication, I guess. Even on anon my mind likes to tie itself in knots, so I know I end up submitting things before I should. I don't intend to drag this out further in any case.
