Re: Transcription

Firstly, I think anyone posting troll transcriptions is disrespectful and childish. I can't stand to see it.

But I also hate the real transcriptions because it's a poorly executed reflex to a problem that doesn't exist. I know that some people said they wouldn't mind seeing them and might even use them for secrets they have trouble reading. But they don't need them.

This community is based on visuals and it would make sense to want to open access to people who can't see. But the transcriptions themselves are largely useless due to formatting and the transcriber's unfamiliarity with the fandoms in the secrets. It's a worthy effort they have made and I applaud what they're trying to do, I just don't think it's something that needs to be done. That it's being done because of some SJW whine rankles.

I would certainly think otherwise if there were a NEED for the transcriptions and would do what I could to help write transcriptions so they are actually beneficial to anyone who needs them. But there isn't a need. And the transcriptions posted so far wouldn't be beneficial to someone who needs them. The intent is kind but the execution is as much a mockery as the troll transcriptions some immature people have posted.

well that at least makes more sense than "lol u mad bro"

although i would hardly call someone's ill-advised but well intended efforts a mockery, though i can certainly see how they'd currently be subpar to a lot of people

personally, i find them useful just because there's still a lot of secrets that have difficult or annoying visual themes, but aside from that it occurs to me that i really wouldn't know what a useful transcription would look like

A useful transcription is one that isn't scattered through threads at random and accurately reflects what is going on in the secret. Which is why they really have to be filled out by the submitter and posted either with the picture or in a separate thread where they can be quickly found.

Right now it is worse than useless because of the errors and the randomness. It actually does harm to the transcriptions by making them hard to find, having them after the conversations they are supposed to inform, and often inaccurate. Which is probably why they are being trolled as they are, to raise awareness of the problems and ensure the issue has visibility. If the protest didn't have shock value it would just be ignored and go under the radar.

The placement of the transcriptions has no bearing on its usefulness. Screen readers can locate the transcriptions within the threads first and then read the other comments within the thread from the beginning or any other given point.

Shock value isn't necessary to give the issue visibility. Once the issue was raised via a secret, discussions began and have been primarily civil, earnest, and mature. Trolling the transcriptions isn't an act of protest against oppressors. It's a childish act that serves only to undermine the intent of introducing and improving a system meant to broaden the inclusivity of the community.

AYRT

The transcriptions are indeed useful to many people. But those aren't people that need them. It may help generate more discussion for hard to read secrets, but they do not make F!S more accessible to users who rely on screen readers because they rarely identify the people/fandoms depicted. Which is understandable since it's a volunteer or possibly a group of volunteers doing this and they cannot be expected to know every person and every fandom that gets posted here. But the fact remains.

I used the word mockery because even though it is well intentioned, it fails to serve the purpose most times. These are not image transcriptions; they are (mostly) transcriptions of the included text without the necessary context that comes from identifying people/places/logos/fandoms. Not including that vital information alienates users who depend on screen readers. Their ability to participate in discussions for unidentified fandoms is limited to addressing the text without knowing the context.

It's like installing a wheelchair access ramp that's on a 30° incline. You've made a show of making the building wheelchair accessible, but really it isn't. I could put in a lot of effort and maybe make it up the ramp, but I would probably flip over backwards before I'm halfway there.

The current system isn't working. The only way to implement a useful transcription service is to foist more requirements/work on submitters, case, or a designated person/group that will delay posting and discourage people from submitting secrets. If there is a need for it, I'm all for doing what I can to make it happen with a minimum of impact on case, but whatever system is implemented will require more of his time. So far, the only people who have spoken up about the need for image transcriptions are people who assume there are people who need them. That is not the same as actually needing them.

It seems to me like a transcription-on-demand service makes more sense? If somebody's having trouble making out a secret, yell for a transcription in the comments. You're pm guaranteed a response, and a higher likelihood that the respondent will get the facts right about the picture. Just seems like it would be more helpful.

Because I would have thought that if the aim was to make the whole comm interpretable through text-only, you would need a much more rigorous system with a dedicated thread to make it worthwhile. The half-measure, though terribly well-intentioned, seems like a lot of work for a fairly slip-shod result.

OTOH, if it's working for people, it's no skin off my nose. But is it actually making a positive difference to people's use of the comm? And if so, that's awesome, but is it worth having a conversation about better ways of implementation?

Cause for all I hate trolling, left in the wilds of the internet, anything tropey like this is crying out for meme-mutation.
