I wonder if part of the problem is the general trend towards stunted discussion spaces? Fewer places where giant walls of text are standard, and where discussions remain accessible for days or weeks without moving off one's dash or blog-cycle?

If you don't ever have the long-winded version of the discussion then of course everybody just ends up rehearsing the same three or four opening moves over and over and over and the conversation never progresses.

I also choose to blame Shakesville.
