Skyler has her moments where she REALLY irritated me, but that was almost all early on the first season when she was trying to dictate to Walt which cancer treatments he had to follow. That's really the only thing that hit my buttons.

Aside from that, no complaints about her. Walt's the problem.

I've yet to see Breaking Bad, but I was really wondering if some of the Skyler hate was unwarranted.

mte! same with Lori from walking dead, like I thought I would hate them initially and have to examine why they were doing what they were doing or something or give them the benefit of the doubt to like them but literally I was waiting to hate them and nothing ever came up! i am confounded

I hated sansa initially and now I love her and I thought it would kind of be the same deal but nope

The one person I know who watches the show can't stand Skyler because Skyler reminds her of her mother, so I'm guessing personal experiences might be involved.

Skyler reminded me so much of my mother during the pillow scene that I had to take a break from the show for a couple days, it was that jarring. Then Walter became an even bigger jackass and I sympathized with Skyler more. I like that she's not a conventionally likable character - I mean, she's had awesome moments, but she's not easy to like - but the audience is supposed to root for her.

Skyler's behaviour in the fifth season so far reminds me of my own mother, even though it's all faked to get the kids out of the house. Junior doesn't know that, so I sympathize with him. Doesn't mean that I hate Skyler, I completely understand why she's doing what she's doing, but it brings back a lot of bad memories for me.

I recently marathoned all the Breaking Bad episodes that have aired so far. Going in I knew that Skyler was hated by fans, and I didn't expect to feel the same, but I thought I'd see something to make me understand some of the hate. I didn't. She did some bad thingsin the name of trying to have some measure of control over her scary life, and I'm supposed to hate her? No.

I hate Skyler not because she's a woman and I do fully admit/acknowledge/think almost all of her actions are justified and probably how I'd react if I were in her position.

The reason she is hated is because she continuously and annoyingly tries to change the way things are (no shit, I would too!) but if things were the way she tries to make them be, we wouldn't have this TV show or we'd have a very boring one.

So... she should be passive and just sit around while the plot happens? She's reacting realistically by your own admission, which creates conflict, which propels the story, and... that's why you hate her?

I don't understand what you want from this character here. Think about it this way - if Skylar just sat around and was oblivious/ignored what her husband was doing, wouldn't it take away from the show? Her character obviously creates conflict, and imo that's the defining point of any story. Hating her for that just seems... weird.

If it makes you feel any better, the rabid hate for Skyler is so widely acknowledged as hypocritical and largely rooted in misogyny that the "Skyler White effect" has become a term amongst writers and critics alike when a female character is despised for bad behaviour while the male characters around her a loved in spite of theirs.

The Skyler hate really surprised me when I went online after finishing the series. (Last November was my Breaking Bad month.)

One of my favorite things about last Yuletide was the Skyler/Jesse fic.

There are points early on in the series where she comes across as a bit passive aggressive that annoyed me because of associations and bad personal experiences I've had, but those were all pretty minor things overall. I like Skyler as a character and I think she reacts pretty realistically to a really, really shitty situation and I really don't get all the hate. Walter White is an interesting character, but he's a complete and utter dick and I honestly hope karma bites him in the ass at the end of the series.

(If it makes you feel any better, OP, someone I know who also watches the series and utterly loathed Skyler for the first four seasons seems to have turned the corner with season 5 and is pro-Skyler now. So, hey, maybe the hate will lessen up a bit?)
