I know very little about Harry Potter, so maybe those names are typical of the canon, but all of those are hilariously ludicrous. I mean, "Pharaoh Johnsbutter"?!

Also, does this mean that AO3 actually creates canonical tags for OCs? I'm trying to learn how the tagging system there works, so this really surprises me.

They do, if it passes the Rule of Three (three different people use the tag in three different works to describe the same person). So if three people use the name "Laura Smith" to describe Harry Potter's grandmother, let's say, then it would become canonized.

Wow, now I'm sure I'll never try to navigate the tags on a big fandom.
Iw would make more sense if all OC's names were under the OC tag instead of that :/

The website doesn't create tags, the creators of the works do. So someone could tag something "kdwouiose" and it would be a tag.

But that doesn't do anything for anyone and just hurts the tag wranglers.

Why people feel the need to tag their OCs with their actual name instead of an 'OC' tag is a mystery to me.

Ah, yes, I know that the writers create the tags, that's why I was a bit confused. I thought that if it's just the name of an OC, then it's a rather uninteresting tag for people in general -- and hence it wouldn't be made canonical by a tag wrangler. (OP explained above that it's made an actual tag if three different writers use it.)

I don't understand it either. Yes, I've created minor OCs for most of my fics, but I wouldn't tag the story with their names. Who would ever know to look for a fic with Iain McCaig in the HP 'verse? Who would ever want to?

It's truly baffling.
