I know very little about Harry Potter, so maybe those names are typical of the canon, but all of those are hilariously ludicrous. I mean, "Pharaoh Johnsbutter"?!

Also, does this mean that AO3 actually creates canonical tags for OCs? I'm trying to learn how the tagging system there works, so this really surprises me.

They do, if it passes the Rule of Three (three different people use the tag in three different works to describe the same person). So if three people use the name "Laura Smith" to describe Harry Potter's grandmother, let's say, then it would become canonized.

The website doesn't create tags, the creators of the works do. So someone could tag something "kdwouiose" and it would be a tag.

But that doesn't do anything for anyone and just hurts the tag wranglers.

Why people feel the need to tag their OCs with their actual name instead of an 'OC' tag is a mystery to me.

What if "Harry" was Hariel the son of Urlilliel "Lily" Potter the Princess of Angels.
Who was herself the "daughter" of Seraph-Archangel Uriel, Angel of Presence and Justice.

Uriel who would become Neo in the Matrix years later, who came back for his 'Grandson'. To teach Hariel.

What if Uriel rescued Hariel from the Dursleys' doorstep with his Soul Mate?
What if Hariel had to learn his Angelic abilites along with Wizard Magic?

I refuse to believe this is a legit story.

Oh god yeah. The Mary Sues and Self Inserts in Potterdom are just appalling. JK Rowling has a lot to answer for by writing a story structured so that it allows for such a massive number of them.

On the other hand, you can never have too much genderbending. Providing it is real genderbending and not just writing an OC and saying it is was the "born a guy version of a female character or vice versa". Turned-into-a-Girl!Draco is my fave Potter character. Recs solicited.

Not sure if this counts, but Rebound (http://archiveofourown.org/works/225207/chapters/340923) by GatewayGirl is pretty good, imho. Draco isn't a girl, but he drinks a potion to turn into one.

There's also Territorial (http://archiveofourown.org/works/12479) by Greenie, which is a really hot PWP, with Sirius and Snape both girls.

I can't think of any good long ones featuring genderswapped characters, though.

I'm totally weirded out by the presence of two names (other than Hippocrates Smethwyk, which it's already been pointed out is a minor canon character) on the list - one is Callidora Lestrange and the other is Cassandra Dorea Potter-Black.

It's weird because Callidora Black and Dorea Potter-Black are both canon names (although it's more likely that Dorea would take on her husband's last name (Potter) rather than do the double-barrel last name thing) so I'm wondering how someone could be familiar enough with the extended Black family to get those names, and yet make those mistakes (or, alternatively, why someone so familiar with the extended Black family would choose those names for unrelated characters)

*Cough* Not that I'm overly familiar with the names of minor characters... *shifty eyes*
