Underrated episodes?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-16 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you think are the most underrated episodes of your favorite shows? Not episodes that are divisive or love/hate or controversial among fans, but episodes that very few people think are as awesome as you think they are.

I know people generally think fairly favorably on this one, but The Rain King's one of my favorite X-Files episodes. People always bring up Bad Blood as the funny X-Files episode, and while that is a funny one I think The Rain King might possibly be a bit more funny.

Similarly, I don't think Hungry (the X-Files episode) really gets the praise it deserves. One of the best episodes.

The Rain King has some cute moments, but too much of it gives me second-hand embarrassment.

Is Hungry the one with the young guy who can't stop eating people? I thought that one was really poignant.

Oh yes, Hungry! I loved that episode so much.

I enjoyed both of those, too. I don't think they get quite as much attention since they came later in the show's run than most of the episodes that are considered classics, but they're definitely good ones.

I assume other people think these are awesome, too, but they may not get as much attention as certain "big" episodes:

On The X-Files I always preferred Monster-of-the-Week episodes to Mytharc episodes and even then, my favorites tend to be comedic ones like "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose," "Jose Chung's From Outer Space," and "Bad Blood."

My favorite Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes include "Starship Mine" (Picard is a badass!), "Who Watches the Watchers?" and that one where Geordie and Ro get "out of phase" and no one can see or hear them and they can't manipulate objects.

I think most people (at this point) prefer Monster of the Week episodes to Myth Arc episodes because the myth arc came so spectacularly unglued, but even if they didn't, it'd be hard to call Clyde Bruckman and Jose Chung underrated. I think most X-Files fans (rightly) consider them the best episodes the show has ever made. Darin Morgan practically has a cult at this point. They're very highly rated and totally rightly so.

Speaking of the X-Files, "The Unnatural" is not only my favorite episode ever and one of my favorite hours of TV I've ever seen. I know that objectively it's no Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose, but it's still way underrated imo.

Also, the Star Trek TNG episode "The Wounded" is just absolutely amazing and should be way more appreciated.

Apparently this is the "X-Files episodes you think are underrated" thread, so I'll contribute. Two Monster of the Week episodes that I've always quite liked but that don't get much attention are "Die Hand Die Verletzt" and "Mind's Eye".

Die Hand Die Verletzt is great - very effectively spooky, great weird atmosphere, and I love that ultimately Mulder and Scully basically don't do anything, they just help an evil spirit work its revenge. They're almost spectators. Mind's Eye is really great mostly because the episode's central character Marty Glenn is so fucking fierce (and also played by the phenomenal Lili Taylor) and because the paranormal aspect is just really cool and so well-linked to the drama, and the ending is just great, deeply depressing stuff.

The curry episode in Utena is the best Nanami ep and no one can tell me otherwise
