I think it's a product of diverging from the original storytelling formula (and I mean the super-basic one, not all the big stuff). Originally, Sam had the Destiny, so the story (big picture) was about Sam, so Dean had to be the standout character so he wouldn't get overshadowed by Sam's destiny. So for a while, they had a pretty good balance of brothers + Sam's destiny + Dean's larger-than-life persona, with both being emo and/or angry and driving around in their car. They started with a fairly good balance, with Sam as Luke/Frodo/Harry and Dean as Han/Sam Gamgee/Ron, or the Hero With a Destiny and the Hero Just Because He's Neat Like That.

Now the writers seem to have realized that Dean's a darling, so Dean's still getting to carry the emotional weight of the show in a way that Sam doesn't, even though the Destiny arcs have gotten a little... out of hand... which just starts to wear down after 8 seasons. Seen episode-by-episode, we get a *lot* more Dean development than Sam development, but it's no longer got the Sam-and-Frodo, Luke-and-Han vibe that it used to. Sam, despite being kind of a big deal still, just seems to have less to do, and we lost a lot of connectedness to him a couple seasons back without ever really recovering from that. So it seems to me the writers are trying to balance the appeal of Dean (who is appealing! so much appeal!) to keep viewers while trying to show Sam growing, but they just... can't. I don't know if it's writing, Jared's acting, or the show having outstayed its welcome, but I find it much more difficult to connect with Sam, and I find a lot of the storylines centering around Dean to be a rehash of the same old Dean Issues with a new coat of paint.

Well, that was well put. The truth is this show should have ended some years ago.

The truth is that it did.

Then they revived it like some kind of a zombie that kind of looks the same but the maggots are still in the major organs.

And mind you, I love the show. But it's pretty bad.

Yeaaaah...

That is a great summation of the show.
