I've thought the same sometimes. I thought that the earlier seasons kept the balance really well but then after s5 it started to feel like Sam was getting put aside more and more.

I feel like I'd like it more if that was the case.

I mean, in a perfect world the Dean and Bobby show featuring Sam and Castiel, but I've come to realize we can't have everything we want in this world.

While I think the show has more of a Dean narrative, I think Sam has all the big story lines. I think every story line except for one is "Something is wrong/happening to Sam that we have to fix."

I have no problem with this. Gimme all the Dean Winchester ManPain and Woobie Eyes. He's so pretty.

On top of that, he's definitely the smarter of the two brothers, IMO, and the more interesting (which is just ridiculous considering Sam's storyline. Wasted, I tell you. Wasted!)

BTW, Supernatural in summary! http://mustlovebooters.tumblr.com/post/51898825938/an-episode-of-supernatural-a-summary-person

[Picture is a close-up of a promotional photo of Dean Winchester from the TV show "Supernatural".]

After years of seeing people rave about this show I decided to give it a try. Because, c'mon, 2 brothers on a demon-killing-roadtrip sounds pretty awesome.

But... the more I watch, the more it looks like this is

'The Dean Show'
(featuring Sam, Castiel and Bobby)

And that is just so... boring.

Dean is the emotional touch stone of the show, so things are usually seen from his POV. However, I'd argue that it's not the Dean show, really, since Sam is usually the one that gets the more active role in things. The plot usually centers around something being wrong with Sam, and then focuses on how events affect Dean. Sometimes, this works out in a way that makes things feel pretty balanced, but later seasons have been bad about feeling pretty unbalanced. In seasons 6 and 7, especially, it felt like Dean was there just because, and Sam didn't have a lot to do until the second half of season 8.

Then again, I know people (like yourself) who have a completely different view of things. I think a lot of it depends on who your fave is. Dean fans tend to have more of a problem with Dean having a less active role in the storyline, Sam fans tend to be bothered by the focus on Dean's POV and view of events, Cas fans tend to get upset if they feel like he's being used as a plot device, and Bobby fans... probably sit in the corner drinking with the Crowley fans, judging everyone else. Or so I like to imagine.

yup. which is why i gave up watching (among many other things). sorry, but over the years i've gotten bored of dean's epic hidden pain and the fact that he is apparently a jackass who hasn't learned anything lol. i swear, they write him with whatever attitude and moral compass is convenient for the current plot line.

sam is my only character i like left and that's not enough to watch.

funny, I gave up around Season 4, because I thought it was too much of a Sam's show (and Sam annoyed me)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-17 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's a product of diverging from the original storytelling formula (and I mean the super-basic one, not all the big stuff). Originally, Sam had the Destiny, so the story (big picture) was about Sam, so Dean had to be the standout character so he wouldn't get overshadowed by Sam's destiny. So for a while, they had a pretty good balance of brothers + Sam's destiny + Dean's larger-than-life persona, with both being emo and/or angry and driving around in their car. They started with a fairly good balance, with Sam as Luke/Frodo/Harry and Dean as Han/Sam Gamgee/Ron, or the Hero With a Destiny and the Hero Just Because He's Neat Like That.

Now the writers seem to have realized that Dean's a darling, so Dean's still getting to carry the emotional weight of the show in a way that Sam doesn't, even though the Destiny arcs have gotten a little... out of hand... which just starts to wear down after 8 seasons. Seen episode-by-episode, we get a *lot* more Dean development than Sam development, but it's no longer got the Sam-and-Frodo, Luke-and-Han vibe that it used to. Sam, despite being kind of a big deal still, just seems to have less to do, and we lost a lot of connectedness to him a couple seasons back without ever really recovering from that. So it seems to me the writers are trying to balance the appeal of Dean (who is appealing! so much appeal!) to keep viewers while trying to show Sam growing, but they just... can't. I don't know if it's writing, Jared's acting, or the show having outstayed its welcome, but I find it much more difficult to connect with Sam, and I find a lot of the storylines centering around Dean to be a rehash of the same old Dean Issues with a new coat of paint.

Couldn't disagree more. It's always felt like the Sam Show to me. I just feel like he's always the one who gets all the storylines, all the myth arcs and Dean's just left to worry about his little brother and take care of his little brother. Something about that really, really irks me. I think it's because I'm an older sister and Supernatural just constantly makes me feel like I'm Doing It Wrong simply because, even though I love my little brother and would jump in front of a bullet for him, I have a life outside of my little brother. Anyway, that went in a different direction than I thought it would, but... Yeah, no. I don't agree.

*currently awaiting an actual storyline for Dean Winchester in season nine - one that does not revolve around Sam or Cas - and is expecting to be disappointed*

But more and more, I kind of just wish it was the Bobby Show.

I stopped watching because I felt that it was the Sam show. Who gets all the big myth storylines? Sam. I was so pissed off when s8 shafted Dean's relationships with other people (in this case Benny) again just so we could get another case of OMFG SAM IS SO SPECIAL.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
S1-3 were my favorite. After Castiel came in it started to feel like the Dean Show. Even with the S6 attempt at a Sam focused arc, I've been disappointed with the later seasons.

(I still love all the characters, but if I had a choice between marathoning the earlier seasons vs the later seasons, I'd choose the earlier seasons and MoW story lines)

To each their own. I don't think it's 'The Dean Show' at all, but hey - you go on. I luff my Show.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
There's been a distressing amount of Dean bashing in fandom recently. It really sucks. :(

FWIW, I don't think the show has really been The Dean Show at all. It's had more focus on Sam (in the sense that he gets stuff to do, even if Dean emotes about it more) but even Sam hasn't had all the focus in S6-S8. It's sort of meandered and at times neither Sam or Dean really have had a lot going on.

Basically I know that supernatural, as described in five minutes or so as like "super cheesy show about two brothers road-trip monster hunting across the States and financing the whole thing with enough identity theft to put them on the FBI's most wanted list", sounded like something I would totally love. Even all the shit with the angels and demons and Castiel and whatever looks kind of cool from afar.

But the fandom.

And the extreme Dean fangirls.

And the DEAN STANS.

I. Just. Could. Not. And CANNOT.

...so, yeah. Haven't watched an episode, so I literally have no idea if it's a Good/Fun Show or a Piece of Shit, and totally will not make that kind of claim about something I've never seen. I just know that I've been exposed to too much Bullshit to really be able to give it the same chance that most people were able to. It's Ruined in Advance.
