I think SJWs are fucking with my head

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Lately I've gotten to the point where any time any band member, author, actor, showrunner, whatever, says or does anything even the slightest bit asshole-ish I feel incredibly guilty listening/reading/watching whatever they're involved in and eventually stop. There's even a semi-friend I quit hanging out with as much because he said something dickish, even though I think he's overall a good guy (though I definitely do disagree with him on some issues).

I didn't even consciously realize I did it, but for some reason it hit me today and I thought "this is really fucking stupid." I can't help but feel like the whole SJW "nothing 'problematic' should be tolerated" mindset is skewing things. I mean, just because someone says or does something douchey, it doesn't make them a bad person, and even if it did, it doesn't mean people can't or shouldn't enjoy their art.

I don't even know where I'm going with this or what my point in posting it is, but yeah. Anyone have any thoughts on this kind of thing?

I feel guilty too sometimes.
And then I remember the asshole SJWs who suck the fun out of everything.
And I keep watching/listening/reading until I start liking the thing again.
Just for spite.

Go read Hemmingway.

Anyway, you can still like "problematic" things. Some SJW-types have written whole essays on how that's okay as long as you acknowledge how awful it is. Which is why certain dark corners of Homestuck fandom persist.

Stop listening to the SJW's. Yes, media is "problematic" and that need to be recognized, but really, just ignore them. It's just a whole circlejerk.

I will never understand why they post their screeds online and never bother to write to the showrunners, etc. about their concerns. Until they start doing that, fuck 'em. If enough people wrote about their concerns directly to the showrunners, etc., it might force them to listen, whereas their complaining about on the internet, even if the showrunners see it, doesn't force them to do a damn thing, except go "look at the whiners!". Mail concerns to the showrunners, advertisers on the shows, etc. and watch things happen. Esp. the advertisers.

Shows are made to sell the ads and if the ads people are upset by comments about the show, well, we might see changes being made, but, no, the SJW's just want to whine, and if things were "fixed", what would they have to complain about?

Not really. Ad companies pay X amount to have their ads shown X amount of times during a given time slot. The most expensive is prime time [which is why you usually only see big companies' ads during that] the least expensive being graveyard [which is why you get some...truly unique ones then]. There are some that are restricted due to watershed laws, but as a rule that's how it works. What's being shown has no effect on their ads, and frankly the networks are the ones who are mostly likely to react to what's going on with a show. Why? Because views are amazingly important to them since they're tied to their profit. If they end up having enough fewer views than other networks they can't charge as much as other networks for ad slots and still expect to keep getting ads, which is part of the reason when a shows viewership falls it either gets moved to a different time slot for a 'hotter' show, or gets cancelled out right.

Can't say that I've ever felt that way. Most people that I know in real life can be right dickheads, me included. Avoiding media that is 'problematic' would feel ridiculous when everyone around me says a lot worse things.

I just use the majority rule: if someone has more positive qualities than negative ones, I have nothing against their company or art. I can easily ignore an occasional brain fart.

It sounds like you just need to sit down and figure out what your own values in all this are. SJW's are very good at manifestos and "cracking down", but they're absolutely terrible at transcribing important values into your personal life.

Being aware is a good thing, it just doesn't mean you're obligated to judge everything in this black-and-white, zero-sum, zero tolerance way. You are free to like people and media that isn't perfect without being a terrible person or an apologist. Likewise, people can say dickish things without it overwriting everything else about their personality.

It's up to you where to draw those lines. Media is easier because you can openly criticize it, provide feedback, or if it really crosses a line, stop feeding it money.

Like, I really enjoyed Ender's Game. I really hate Orson Scott Card. He's a malicious homophobic bigot. So I bought the book used so he wouldn't see any money from it.

That sort of thing. ~The Power is Yours~, anon.

I've had a similar experience as well (since I started studying sociology and psychology).

There's nothing wrong with being aware of things in media that are a bit dodgy. It's a natural part of learning that you'll start to become more aware of these things. If you know a bit about advertising, it becomes incredibly hard to sit through all the adverts.

But I don't think you have to feel guilty for watching and enjoying things that are a bit dodgy. Pretty much ALL media is going to have elements that are "problematic", because it's filtered through our culture and the people who write stuff.

Acknowledge it, accept it, and try to focus on the bits you DO enjoy. There may be some things that you won't be able to enjoy at all (I can't watch romantic comedies - never really enjoyed them, and now they're just painful.) But knowing a bit about how society works doesn't mean you're not "allowed" to enjoy entertainment anymore.

It'll get better with time.

Is you need to cut yourself off from the source/s.

Tumblr blogs you follow, some forum you frequent, obviously somebody's blasting this negativity at you and you are soaking it up. If you don't want your sponge in the sink taking in water, you turn off the water.

I'm sure you'll wonder how you'll do without, as I'm sure it has other benefit you like. But I promise you after a while away the world will start looking less horrible.

also, after a while, reconnect with friend if you can. Don't let them affect ruin your real life.
