i actually like the names, they feel ~medievally~ and fantasy-ish without feeling too tryhard

+1

This,
I actually admire GRRM for coming up with fantasy names that sound very fitting & convincing rather than some nonsense like Céa'th'Rlynn-Däihxxxx

Agreed! I like them precisely BECAUSE they echo names that are familiar to me. Combining it with Ser/nuncle/jape, I get a feeling of an alternate Earth.

same. a few of them bug me/used to bug me but I like them. feels medieval and yet unique to this 'verse at the same time.

Exactly this! Especially when you take into account shifting English language and the fact that a lot of names looked much the same 500+ years ago. There WAS no legitimate, set spelling for anything, including names, until fairly recently, all things considered.(Padriag is still one of my favorite old names.)

Also, I like the way Cersei looks over Circe. But Jaime just bugs me because I think it should be pronounced like the Hispanic name.

that's a really interesting point, and i guess that explains even more why they all seem pretty organic and feasible to me in their own right

same on both counts of these, and i only guessed jaime's pronunciation because i once knew a girl by that name irl who pronounced it that way

i also had such a time with mary wollstonecraft's Maria years ago in a class i was taking for that reason, and i think i was the only one who didn't know it was meant to be "ma-rye-uh" instead of "ma-ree-uh"

in my defense i live in the southwest

I live in the southeast (french-ish area), and I don't know anyone who wouldn't pronounce Maria as "ma-ree-uh." I thought the other was was always spelled "Mariah." Huh.

da

I learned that alternate pronunciation from Jane Austen stuff. Apparently it's an 18th/19th century British thing.
