i have no opinion about GoT save that i strongly dislike the show, but when i saw the name 'samwell' i couldn't help but think of this

Are you new to fantasy? It's a common naming shtick, for as long as I can remember.

Weird names in fantasy bug me too. I don't mind authors making up names, but I hate it when they are difficult to spell and pronounce and there is no consistency in the spelling. And GRRM isn't making up names, just altering them or spelling them strangely.

Like Jaime and Cersei - if Jaime is supposed to be pronounced like Jamie in the books, why not use Circe for Cersei, since then they would both end in just an E, representing the long E sound. The -ei ending makes me want to say it with an "ay" sound.

Actually, with the creative spelling that parents like to use for their kid's names these days, those almost look a little too modern for a medieval setting. I especially hate the 'replace an i with a y to make it unyque!' trend.

But I did LOL at Samwell. "How are you today?" "Sad to say, I'm Samwell."

I like it, though. But English isn't my mother tongue, so...

(In the Spanish version the places' names and the bastards' surnames are changed, so we have Jon Nieve who used to live in Invernalia and Alayne Piedra, who is currenly living at Nido de Águilas, for instance XD).

To each their own - I love them! I hate fantasy names that come off as obviously made up, but 'mundane' names would throw me off, too. I like the compromise in GoT.

Jaime (with that spelling and the pronunciation they give it in the show) is already a real name, too. And not that uncommon (at least here in the US).

I really like the story and the world, but I read spoilers instead of the actual books because I just can't get past the character names.

Eddard. What's wrong with Edward?

Kevan. You mean... Kevin?

Jaime. I can't not read it as Hai-may.

Edmure. How about... uh, Edmund.

Cersei. Can't it be Circe?

Jeyne. Jane, maybe?

Petyr and Quentyn. What's with the y's? That doesn't really change the etymology.

Chett. ...Seriously? Fucking Chett?

Samwell. If "Samwise" means "halfwit", does Samwell mean "half health"?

(I'd bitch about Joffrey, but that's apparently a real name. Still. How about Geoffrey? Or Jeffrey?)

"It's fantasy! Get over it!" But it's weird reading a series where the "fantasy" names look like mispellings of real names. Also, Ser and Maester? What?

Confession: I love the books, but I've never actually read any of them myself. I only have the audiobooks. GRRM's weird use of italics combined with 'ser' made it impossible for me to look at anything he's written. It just looks so ... untidy.

I can see your point and I admit the gratuitous fantasy y's can get a bit grating but I'm p sure Jaime and Edmure at least are real names.

I prefer the GoT names as they are. Why would I want to see modernized, everydayspellings in a fantasy book?

The names in GoT are distractingly half-assed. Stuff like "Jeyne" is hilariously lazy-- and there are two of them!

Samwell sounds like someone wanted to make one name out of "Sam Rockwell".
I don't know, OP.
I think it's nice to have fantasy names that sound a bit like actual names. It fits the world of the books.

PS: I'd totally name my future kid "Cersei" because I love the sound of it so much but I'm afraid people would forever bully them for it.

I'm confused because as far as I know these are all legit, if somewhat archaic, names.

And 'ser' is a legitimate form of address/courtesy title, usually for when somebody's gender and/or social rank are unknown.

Your point is interesting, but for anyone living in the US, have you seen what American parents are calling their kids nowadays? Even when they choose normal first names, they often spell it differently than you'd expect (eg, Alysse?! What's wrong with Alice, so the kid doesn't end up spending half her life spelling it each time she gets asked, to the badly hidden amusement of whomever is filling in a form?)

They are not Mary Sues or Gary Stus for God's sake, they are real people: just give them innocuous names so they don't get bullied!

When it comes to first names, the key is NOT to choose anything too original - unless you are writing fiction.

I have no real problem with GRRM using a well-known fantasy naming convention in his fiction, but I admit it irritates me to see the same IRL.

Don't get me wrong, I am fine with people renaming themselves whatever they want - it can make make them look ridiculous, but it's their own choice. But I hate to see parents doing it to innocent kids - and you'd be surprised how difficult it is to try to rectify your legal first name or even simply shorten it to initials when you are an adult and realize what the problem is.
