Yes, it is realistic, I know. There's a difference between making a joke in historic fiction about societal name trends and, for instance, giving two minor fictional characters the same name for no real reason.

I'm not defensive, I'm not even involved in the fandom-- I think my theatre nerdery got away from me and my point. Which is: I'm not comparing GRRM's writing or plots to Shakespeare; I'm talking about the subject matter, which is very comparable. It's the stated starting point for ASOIAF: a fantasy War of the Roses.
