Erm, there are LITERALLY over a thousand named characters in this series. I think it's just realistic that there are popular names in Westeros that more than one person have (Jon, Jeyne, Robert etc.).

It's realistic, but it's kind of silly in fiction. ESPECIALLY when there are over 1,000 characters and it's already easy to confuse them without them having identical names.

DA

I actually think it'd be more confusing if each character had a completely unique name.

The use of similar/identical names within houses/families/friendships makes placing the people easier for me.

Have you ever studied any average royal/noble families? There are only so many names that are used within those circles- you name your children after their predecessors and a few generations later you've got a tangled mess full of Henrys, Richards, Edwards, and Margarets and not much else.

In Richard III, there's a great passage (4.4.39-44) between Margaret of Anjou and the Duchess of York (Cicely Neville, mother of Edward IV and Richard III) where they list a bunch of dead people who all share names:

MARGARET: I had an Edward, till a Richard killed him; (her son Prince Edward; Henry VI's heir)
I had a husband, till a Richard killed him. (King Henry VI)
Thou hadst an Edward, till a Richard killed him; (Duchess's grandson, Prince Edward; Edward IV's heir)
Thou hadst a Richard, till a Richard killed him. (Duchess's grandson, Richard of York; Edward IV's second son)

DUCHESS: I had a Richard too, and thou didst kill him; (Richard, Duke of York; the Duchess's husband)
I had a Rutland too, thou holp'st to kill him. (Edmund, Earl of Rutland; historically the Duchess's second surviving son, but Shakespeare was working from an inaccurate source that names him as the youngest so his murder by the Lancastrians is more shocking.)

Oh, for the love of Christ, I can't believe how defensive y'all are getting about this.

Yes, it is realistic, I know. There's a difference between making a joke in historic fiction about societal name trends and, for instance, giving two minor fictional characters the same name for no real reason.

/first and last time anyone compares GRRM's writing to Shakespeare

Yeah, but there's plenty of stuff that breaks the One Steve Limit.

I'm not defensive, I'm not even involved in the fandom-- I think my theatre nerdery got away from me and my point. Which is: I'm not comparing GRRM's writing or plots to Shakespeare; I'm talking about the subject matter, which is very comparable. It's the stated starting point for ASOIAF: a fantasy War of the Roses.

You are confusing disagreement with your point with defensiveness. The only one who "sounds" defensive in this text-based discussion is...you.

No, statements like "Erm, there are LITERALLY over a thousand named characters in this series" and snottily asking me if I've "studied" noble families is definitely defensive and unnecessary.

Hah, that's awesome.
