It honestly never ocurred to me that Hanji might me male until I poked around a bit on the internet. I've heard there's debate on the Japanese side too, though.

the debate on tumblr was just spurred by someone who spent most of their post framing that hanji was explicitly intended to be portrayed as non-binary/gender ambiguous, when we just really don't know if that's the case or not

claiming that it's a strong possibility and that idea with subtext would have been fine, but outright labeling it as misgendering to refer to hanji as female inaccurate and dishonest to fans whom it might personally matter to, because what if they're not?

as usual, it just seems like some people took an inch and ran a mile and decided to be policing dickbags about it

i've also heard that there's discussion about it in japanese fandom too, but all i know personally is that i've seen a lot of different stuff around pixiv of both male and female interpretations of hanji *shrug*

wow, what i meant by the middle paragraph:

Even if Hanji was "non-binary/gender ambiguous" she'd still have a sex, yeah? Being female wouldn't change her gender... Oh wait, gender trumps sex always I'll go educate myself brb.

is the character being called "he" met with the same vitriol or is it only offensive to use "she"? or are both terrible and we're supposed to adopt one of the tons of made-up gender-neutral tumblr pronouns that always look stupid?

in japanese fandom, i wouldn't really know

on tumblr, the scanlations all refer refer to hanji as "she" and there's a piece of official art that pictures her in a dress, so virtually no one probably interpreted her as a male to begin with

so the SJW's stick to taking offense to any gendering beyond 'neutral', yeah

Yeah, the idea is really really cool but the actual evidence (which pretty much amounts to Isayama's flippant/possibly trolly comment and the fact that Hanji hasn't explicitly been referred to as male or female, which isn't exactly difficult or unusual in Japanese) is so scant that getting up in people's faces about it and implying that someone's a bad person if they don't share your particular interpretation is just ridiculous.
