Context?

What's SJS?
I don't clearly understand what the drama was about, I've deleted my Tumblr anyway...and what do you mean with "Japanese side"? There are plenty of Japanese people on Tumblr as well?

(Ah, I've recorded the new episode of 進撃の巨人 yesterday night. Going to watch it with my husband in the evening.)

I believe the OP may have meant SJs, which means 'social justice'. Basically people fussing about social justice issues and all

Social Justice Sally, I'd imagine.

It honestly never ocurred to me that Hanji might me male until I poked around a bit on the internet. I've heard there's debate on the Japanese side too, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
the debate on tumblr was just spurred by someone who spent most of their post framing that hanji was explicitly intended to be portrayed as non-binary/gender ambiguous, when we just really don't know if that's the case or not

claiming that it's a strong possibility and that idea with subtext would have been fine, but outright labeling it as misgendering to refer to hanji as female inaccurate and dishonest to fans whom it might personally matter to, because what if they're not?

as usual, it just seems like some people took an inch and ran a mile and decided to be policing dickbags about it

i've also heard that there's discussion about it in japanese fandom too, but all i know personally is that i've seen a lot of different stuff around pixiv of both male and female interpretations of hanji *shrug*

That... that was a thing that happened. And I want to forget it happened. Because I lost a lot of brain cells just knowing it happened.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
But why would SJWs be butthurt about people thinking one of the few not-yet canon fodder characters in a higher position being female? Isn't that a good thing?
Or is it that they want Hanji to be one of the many trans* varieties?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently Isayama has answered to reader questions that Hansi could be more or less androgynous, but uhh... I always thought of her as female myself. I'm pretty sure I've seen her drawn with boobs in the manga. Also her VA is a woman.

(inb4 "men can have boobs too transphobic cis scum!!!")

A lot of male characters have female voice actors, though?

tbf her va is a woman who is pretty well known for playing male roles if i remember right :p

i think of her as a woman too, but i see no reason why she couldn't be non-binary, i just think it's dumb for people to fight about it

Having a female voice actress and boobs does not actually necessarily make the character female. Gender and sex are not the same thing.

To be fair, Japanese gender equality is pretty bad. The World Economic Forum does a yearly ranking of Gender Equality, and in 2012 of the 135 countries surveyed Japan ranked a whopping 101st. Saying "Japan's not having this debate" honestly doesn't mean all that much.

EDIT: not sure of the anime, so I might be off, but.

Oh. Is this another one of those Krona debates? Hm.

I still think Krona is female

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that character is female? I've only watched the anime and I think she's only been in it for a couple brief scenes, but somehow I thought she was a guy. Though I don't care either way... it was just the impression I got.

[Picture is Hanji Zoe from the anime "Attack on Titan"/"Shingeki no Kyojin".]

I never understood the dislike for tumblr SJS until the drama with this character. FUCK YOU, I'm not oppressing anyone by calilng a badass female character "her". The fact that this debate only exists in the tumblr corner of the fandom and not the Japanese side is pretty telling.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-19 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not in this fandom nor do I have any idea what the topic is, but...Japanese fans' reactions to potentially offensive stuff is not a good barometer for judging whether or not you should personally be outraged at something. At all.

Just saying.

What's so "telling" about the majority of Japanese fans not talking about it? (Just assuming you're right when you say that Japanese fans don't talk about it, which I highly doubt)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-19 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Japanese fans do discuss the topic. It's just they only really think of gender in binary terms. Therefore they have decided the best way to go about it is to leave it to the author's discretion to label fanworks either Hanji(female) or Hanji(male), depending on your preference.

Really dumb question, please bare with me: how can I talk about an ??? character without sounding like a douchebag? I don't want to call them "it" because that's just so dehumanizing, but I also don't want to refer to them as "them" all the time because that sounds like they are not one single person and that often confuses me when I write because English is not my first language.

In real life it's easy. I just ask what the person in question wants to be called. But fictional characters can't be asked *g*

I think the main issue that most of Tumblr is conveniently forgetting is cultural context. Non-binary genders are not a thing that exists in Japanese culture so I very much doubt Isayama intends for Hanji to be read as non-binary. It's far more likely that he's just leaving the matter ambiguous for the time being and will confirm it one way or the other eventually, but right now he himself seems to be treating it almost as a running gag every time people ask about it.

People are taking a lack of information to be information, and chances are, they're wrong.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-19 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
But...Japan is kind of notorious for being pretty bad on a lot of SJ issues [like gender equality, racism, etc]? So...they're reaction to stuff like that isn't exactly the best thing to base that kind of judgement on?
