EDIT: not sure of the anime, so I might be off, but.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-19 10:47 am (UTC)(link)so a): gender identities are not the same as anglo-american gender identities, and just imposing them on japan has an imperialistic quality to it.
and b): since there is little public discussion of "gender" and "sex" as constructed ideas in japan, seing representations of various subversive sexual or gender identifications in a medium is 90% interpretation on the side of the western viewer. I'm not all for "the authors intention is all that matters", but since we're not discussing how a character is "read", but what they're "supposed to be", we _are_ discussing intention.
