but in this light: there's another debate 99% of japan isn't having: the gender-debate as "we" know it. So if a character has boobs in a japanese medium they will probably be intended to be female, even if this conflicts with their "seikaku"/nature. most famous example: oscar. Other example: the "okama" gender.

so a): gender identities are not the same as anglo-american gender identities, and just imposing them on japan has an imperialistic quality to it.
and b): since there is little public discussion of "gender" and "sex" as constructed ideas in japan, seing representations of various subversive sexual or gender identifications in a medium is 90% interpretation on the side of the western viewer. I'm not all for "the authors intention is all that matters", but since we're not discussing how a character is "read", but what they're "supposed to be", we _are_ discussing intention.
