Re: Question from non-fan
Another is that Moffat would mess it up because he's not awesome at writing female characters over a long story arc. (I think he's actually quite good at female characters in one-offs, but as a showrunner, inconsistent characterization seems to happen a lot on his watch, and it's way more obvious with his women than with his men.)
I tend to prefer it when I can reasonably imagine the Doctor as alien (Four being my favourite, then Two, and Eleven doing remarkably in that regard), which tends to equal funny looking. Casting conventions being what they are, male gaze blah blah blah, funny looking women don't get cast as leads, though it's better in the UK than in North America. Still, we'd probably end up with a conventionally pretty woman. I'd like to see someone like Tilda Swinton as a female Doctor, but most of the names that I've seen tossed around—besides Helen Mirren, who would also be completely fantastic—are young, conventionally beautiful, and basically not weird looking enough.
This said, I love the idea of a female Doctor in theory. I would also like to see a Doctor who isn't white.
