Question from non-fan

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
All I've seen is "OMG YES DO WANT" in response to a female doctor... so for those who are against the idea, why?

Because the current showrunner would ruin it. It would be a huge flaming ball of horrible 'strong female character' tropes, instead of a Doctor who just happens to be a chick.

So I'm not against one per se. Just with this current showrunner.

they don't want to look at some girl, they're just here for the pretty menz

Heh, as someone who's been a fan of Who since about the end of the Third Doctor/beginning of the Fourth, this is so patently ridiculous!

Doctor Who didn't start with 'pretty men'. Some of us just don't feel that it's ever been established in canon that a Time Lord could regenerate into a different gender. Every Time Lord or Time Lady that's ever been show to regenerate on the series has stayed the same. I'm personally tired of seeing fifty years of canon hand-waved away for the sake of shoddy/shock storytelling. If people want a female Time Lady so bad, why not find an excuse to bring back Romana or the Rani?

Re: Question from non-fan

(Anonymous) 2013-06-19 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't matter if the show didn't start with "pretty men". The New Who brought in a whole new slew of people who had never seen doctor who before, and most never do watch the original.

So a lot of the teenage and 20-somethings that are into New Who are up in arms over the Doctor being a woman because, yes, they want to fangirl over the menz.

(And then self insert on the companions as they're always female).

And I'm sure there's a mix of homophobia in there too.

"Pretty"

I seriously don't understand what's supposed to be attractive about the current Doctor's looks. He looks like made out of wax and his forehead rivals some apes'.

Because I have zero faith that any show runner would do anything resembling a good job dealing with the concept of gender vs sex and gender fluidity that would go along with this change.

It'd either be an offensive mess or it'd blithely conflate sex with gender and just

NOPE

ayrt

Ooh. So the doctor is like a being that changes into all the various doctors, instead of each one being an individual? Then the change from male to female would be too awkward for TV I guess.

Yeah. The Doctor is the same being, but when he is near death he can regenerate into a new body.

And I'm sure that if this were to ever happen on the show the Doctor would be like "LOL! I HAVE BOOBS NOW!! ISN'T THIS HILARIOUS?"

It'd be awful.

Yes; he regenerates instead of dying. There are personality differences between the different regenerations, but they're ultimately all the same character, with the same memories and experiences.

As everyone else has said, the show-runner is the problem. otoh, those who make out male Doctor vs female Doctor to be some kind of SJ issue need to take a freaking chill pill imo. I doubt most people don't want a female Doctor because ~patriarchy~ or whatever, good grief.

Re: Question from non-fan

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not much of a fan, but for me it boils down to this:
1) Every single doctor has been a man so far, so I see no reason to suddenly make him a woman for the sole reason of making him a woman.

2) It would be pretty much admitting that there is no way to write an interesting and popular female character from the scratch, so they would have to take an existing popular male character and turn him female to get anyone watch her.

[personal profile] fauxkaren 2013-06-18 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, also... under the right writer, the female companions can be just as interesting, strong, important and dynamic a character as the Doctor is. So idk. You don't NEED the Doctor to be a woman in order to have a strong female presence on the show.

Re: Question from non-fan

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Ayrt. Good point. I'd rather see them concentrating on the companions and making them as multilayered characters as the doctor.

Both good points. So if there were a spin-off or a new evolution of the show that started with a female doctor, you'd be cool with that? Assuming, as others have said, they did the character justice.

I would totally watch a show with a female Time Lord!

As long as Moffat wasn't in charge of it.

Ayrt. Sure, I'd definitely like to see how they'd do that. Well, as long as the actresses playing the doctors would be chosen for their acting ability instead of appearing on Maxim, anyway.

I'm not against the idea, but I think there are a few reasons that aren't horribly misogynist. One is double standards in regards to characters who are Mary Sues; the Doctor is awesome and brilliant at everything, and can you imagine the wank with a female character who was that perfect? The River Song bashing is bad enough as is.

Another is that Moffat would mess it up because he's not awesome at writing female characters over a long story arc. (I think he's actually quite good at female characters in one-offs, but as a showrunner, inconsistent characterization seems to happen a lot on his watch, and it's way more obvious with his women than with his men.)

I tend to prefer it when I can reasonably imagine the Doctor as alien (Four being my favourite, then Two, and Eleven doing remarkably in that regard), which tends to equal funny looking. Casting conventions being what they are, male gaze blah blah blah, funny looking women don't get cast as leads, though it's better in the UK than in North America. Still, we'd probably end up with a conventionally pretty woman. I'd like to see someone like Tilda Swinton as a female Doctor, but most of the names that I've seen tossed around—besides Helen Mirren, who would also be completely fantastic—are young, conventionally beautiful, and basically not weird looking enough.

This said, I love the idea of a female Doctor in theory. I would also like to see a Doctor who isn't white.

If Tilda Swinton became the Doctor I would probably start watching it again; I reckon she'd do a great job.

Because Steven Moffat's female characters are his personal masturbation fantasies. Conventionally pretty, *feisty*, with a life centred entirely around the main male character.

He used to be a regular writer for Doctor Who before he took over as showrunner, and I still maintain that his one off episodes are brilliant. It just doesn't really work on a long-term basis, and I'm convinced a female Doctor would make it worse.

On principle, I'd love it to happen. And if it was decided that, say, Helen Mirren or Judy Dench would take over as the Doctor and force Moffat out of his usual shtick when it comes to writing women, I'd love that too. But Moffat & women in general is a big red flag.

Because

(Anonymous) 2013-06-19 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
The Doctor, to me, is MALE. That's his constant, and I LIKE that. I hate that you're accused of being misogynistic/sexist if you don't want a female Doctor. I for one don't, and sorry SJWs, but that doesn't make me misogynistic/sexist. The Doctor has been male for 11 regenerations (well, 10, technically), and I personally don't see a problem with that. It's an intricate part of who he is, and to take that away? Yeah, no. While I definitely wouldn't mind an episode or two that featured a temporary genderswap, I seriously don't want it to be a permanent thing.

Ugh, I can't even imagine (UNLESS IT'S HELENA BONHAM CARTER, TO WHICH I'D TOTALLY, TOTALLY APPROVE). One of my favorite things about Doctor Who is that I get to fall in love with the Doctor over and over again (some regenrations exempted). I'm talking epic crushes here. And I look forward to that. Having a female Doctor would ruin it.

Yeah, definitely too off-putting to think about.

Re: Because

(Anonymous) 2013-06-19 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Helena bonham carter, ARE YOU SERIOUS. I'm sick of seeing her everywhere and I could NOT see her as the Doctor. At all.

This.

Except for the Helena Bonham Carter part. I don't want a female doctor period..

I'm a fan and I'd be happy with a female Doctor. Thing is, Miranda Hart would be perfect, but she's too famous and successul now, I would think too busy and too expensive. Still it would be a nice dream!
