I get it. If someone's primary form of entertainment is going out to bars, and you hate bars and want to stay home, it could get annoying quick unless you don't mind being apart a lot.

I'm assuming OP's crush doesn't have an actual drinking problem and they're just talking about social drinking.

I've seen enough moralizing on F!S to automatically read it as more of a "ew he drinks!" high horse attitude, though I know that's not likely here.

Oh man. I've dealt with that in person. Not fun. Probably contributed to my best friend's bachelorette party being shitty.

Goddamn bridesmaid in a small wedding party didn't come, Supposedly because she couldn't drive in. Despite not living too far away. When I'd made a point of finding a venue that wouldn't at all pressure her into drinking. Because someone, somewhere, may have had a beer.

She's understating how lame this bachelor party was.

Well don't start a story and leave us hangin'

THE STORY

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-06-19 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
So I was the maid of honor at my best friend from college's wedding. Wedding itself was great except for the dresses (they were godawful. Yellow!) and the bachelorette party.

Nobody came. Now granted she'd wanted a small party, but still: nobody came. I planned it all out. We were going to go to the laser tag place our gaming club used to have events at. They serve beer, but it's definitely not an alcohol heavy place. If anyone had beer it was going to be with pizza, in other words.

And nobody came. Most awful was the fact that the two other bridesmaids from college didn't come. Neither of them like to drink--which is fine. One was an hour away, had just gotten out of her job at 9 pm and just didn't think she could make it--that was okay, because the party was effectively over anyway. Nobody was coming.

So my friend said her stomach hurt (which was probably true; after she got married she was diagnosed with various food allergies), and we just go to a shitty dive bar near their house.

Cut to my best friend in a pink light up bride-to-be tiara and a sash and no party at the shittiest bar in Buffalo.

I felt pretty awful at this point. But guess who showed up to the party!

The groom's mother and his teen mother sister! The one with all the tattoos and poor life decisions. I can't really blame her though because GOD DAMN THE MOTHER

THE MOTHER IS A POT HEAD. As in, she suggested we smoke up and started rolling a joint later. To smoke with her son (not so bad) and her daughter (the under eighteen teen mother) with HER GRANDAUGHTER IN A PLAYPEN IN THE NEXT ROOM.

Now I am definitely pot-friendly, though I get really uncomfortable around obvious potheads--that is, not hippies and Greatful Dead fans, but people who have obviously trashed their lives with the stuff. I am INTENSELY uncomfortable in this situation as there's a kid there. Well, two kids there, as I CONSIDER TEEN MOTHER A KID.

Just... I didn't tell this story very well but it was not a good day. Eventually she gave up on the pot and we had pizza, though! That was nice.

Ugh. My poor friend.

Wait, so the people who didn't show up didn't show up because they didn't want to be around beer? Because that part didn't really come across.

That day sounds like shit btw.

I think there were multiple reasons people didn't show up. I'm sure this was the reason the one friend didn't show up, which is particularly shitty because she was one of the only bridesmaids and is one of the bride's good friends.

I'm just trying to convey how awful this day was in general.

It's what Chardmonster said. He thinks drinking and getting drunk is a good way to pass time. I'm more of the staying sober while having fun type. He has a separate grocery bill just for alcohol and I think alcohol is a once-per-month tops kind of thing. He joked about getting drunk every day of his vacation where his daughter's away visiting relatives... Our social lives are not compatible at all.

He's clearly a loser. What kind of drugs are you on that there aren't huge Red Alert sirens going off in your head right now OP?

Re: I am going to hell

THIS. It puts a whole different spin on OP's lament of "Why God why do you keep dangling (loser) guys like him in front of me?"

wtf

... separate grocery bill for alcohol
... getting drunk every day

uhhhhhh. i don't know this guy, but based solely on what you're saying here, these are making alarm bells go off in my mind.

Those are major red flags, OP. If it's not already an alcoholic (and quite frankly, if he considers getting drunk a worthwhile regular activity in itself it kinda sounds like he might be) he's definitely taking a brisk walk down that path.

Demote this down to casual workplace friendship. Don't see him outside of work, remain friendly and civil but greatly decrease the amount of time you spend with him while at work. And definitely do not under any circumstances drink with him in case you both do something you'll regret.

I'm not sure if he's serious about drinking so much or if it is all joke. He's Russian so he makes a lot of "Russians drink every day" and "this food will go down easier with a beer or two" kind of jokes. I definitely don't see him outside of work and I don't plan to. I rarely drink so the chance of something inappropriate happening is low. I will stop talking to him as much at work though. Thank you for all the advice. :)
