Re: Question for non-English/ ESL speakers....

Short answer: because English has taken over fucking everything and we can't get rid of it.

Long answer, because that is how we speak, that is how we are taught and how it is used on our television or by our peers. Sometimes because the English word have a slightly different meaning than the Norwegian equivalent random is one of those, we have a couple of words that mean almost the same but not one word.

Other times because we don't have the word in Norwegian, we write Ketchup, Pub, Bar and Laptop (though we have DataMaskin, which can be translated directly as Data Machine) and Internet among other things because we didn't have the words on our own, or in some cases like with: Bag which we gave to the Brits first then in the form of Baggur, then we forgot it in Scandinavia (minus Iceland) and got it back as Bag.

There are a lot of words I use that are English but I don't pronounce the same way Football and Music (though we spell it: Fotball and Musikk) is two examples of that, a lot of it is also because we have the same language ancestor, (which we call language tree in Norwegian) so our words had the same start but evolved slightly differently.

Quite a few of the "new words" internet and so on that we use the English instead of a Norwegian word is because our government does not care, Iceland on the other hand has a offical group that makes up Icelandic words for new English (or other languages) words as they come to preserve the Icelandic language.

That got long, but there is a couple of explanation to why we use seemingly random English words in our native language.

India is an exception (and thus have different reasons) as a previous Colony and I am sure the other Colonies that the British Empire used to have, have a similar way of speaking. I know Singapore does.

It's interesting that words for something *don't exist* in Norwegian. Is the language itself more resistant to being mangled into made up words?

I wonder if the average Joe in the street in Iceland is annoyed or delighted by their government's efforts to keep the language close to its origins?

Etymology and how language gets shipped around all over the world is fascinating stuff. And no, not long - i like that you took the time. :)

It is more easily made into more words than English, we do this fun thing where we add words together, as in GrandMother or HousePartyFoodDishes, and so on. It is just that it is easier to use the original words sometimes, just like English uses Latin and French.

Porbably pretty good with it, they do like their language! They almost speak *viking*.

It is fun! I am glad it was informative at least!
