To this day I can't watch Aladdin without making a face like I'm licking a lemon, because of the Tom Cruise thing. Well, that and that you've got the good guy who's basically just a white guy with a tan, and the bad guy Jafar who is...distinctly...more ethnic. It bothered me even as a kid.

And I'm probably going to be thrown out for this, but Robin Williams annoys the hell out of me.

"Well, that and that you've got the good guy who's basically just a white guy with a tan, and the bad guy Jafar who is...distinctly...more ethnic"

That's Disney for ya. And while I have nothing against Williams, his voice work annoys the shit out of me as well.

Everything about this comment + Jasmine's speaking voice annoys the piss out of me.

Her speaking voice? Her SINGING voice. I just can't deal with people who sing very high, no matter how good they are at it.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I've no idea who either of Jasmine's voice actresses are, but if you think she 'sings very high,' does that mean you hate every soprano ever? Because her voice isn't that high pitched--I mean, she probably is a soprano and not a mezzo-soprano, but she doesn't hit any glass-shattering notes that I remember. (I've got a friend who hates most soprano singing despite being a soprano, meanwhile, I've got a range of probably half an octave of squeaky alto. Sigh.) I wonder how common it is to hate a voice type? I mean, besides hating one's own voice, which is apparently pretty common.

Not sure about her speaking voice but her singing voice is Lea Salonga and she's mezzo-soprano so..

This part just makes me grind my teeth. I can't even properly explain why, it just registers as "high, argh, HIGH" to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-26 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I just listened to it - it's never bothered me, and it doesn't strike me as especially high, but on reflection it's also one of those parts where she has to strain her voice and thin it out to get the note high enough, and I could see how that would be unpleasant if it hit you wrong.

~I wonder how common it is to hate a voice type?~

I apparently have A Thing about baritones, though I didn't realize it when I was younger, save that I couldn't stand listening to half the songs on my parents' classic Christmas albums.

There are actual people that look like Alladin IRL though. Skin tone, nose and everything. Would you say they're white with a tan too?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm saying that Aladdin, the good guy, the guy we're supposed to root for and love, was purposefully made with "white" features (as he was modeled after Tom Cruise). Jafar, on the other hand, the bad guy, the guy we're supposed to loathe and vilify, was purposefully made with much more distinctly Middle-Eastern features (one might argue almost to the point of being a caricature).

Real people don't factor into this at all. Aladdin was based on a white man. Jafar was not. And that's not really all right.

That is so not Tom Cruise's nose.

Front view is totally not adding up, sorry.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Modeled from 'elements derived from Tom Cruise and Calvin Klein models'. Not Tom Cruise in his entirety.

I hadn't thought of it in terms of ethnic features, but Aladdin has broader, stronger features while Jafar is pointy and weaselly. I noted something similar in a comparison of Kovu and Scar recently.

Chrissakes, get over the corny idea that facial features are strictly unique to races and can be found no where else. There is PLENTY of overlap.
