A Theif is a theif. Kid was lucky to have his hands, let alone get to become a bad boy sex icon.

Meh, I think the whole "bad boy" thing has to have more to it than that. It's a whole personality type.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
There's a scene like that in the original cut of Thief and the Cobbler. The thief steals these golden back scratchers from the princess, and then is caught stealing. So he pretends the scratchers are his hands, and they get cut off instead of his real hands.

I wonder why that was cut from the Miramax version, heh.

AIIEEE NO he doesn't look like Tom Cruise! D:<

(Never heard him referred to as a "bad boy", but yeah... I don't get it either.)

Well, he was modeled after Tom Cruise, so... he does a little. :P

Yeah I do not see it. Even after vethica said he was modeled after him, still not seeing it.

Tho that could be because of my total love of the character and total dislike of Tom Cruise and thus my brain is just stopping me from seeing any likeness.

I don't think he looks a damn thing like Tom Cruise.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-19 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
lol @ Tom Cruise

Probably because he was cunning and sarcastic and willing to get down and brawl when he had to, and because while he did have a good heart, he didn't entirely seem to mind deceiving people to get what he wanted.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-19 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Because he isn't someone her family would have approved of (had they known who he was), and he ends up with the girl at the end. Everyone knows girls like bad boys, so if you're a guy in a relationship with a girl and her parents didn't arrange it and she isn't marrying you for your money, you MUST be "bad."

Or it's just classism.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I vote for the classism. Not that he's a bad boy per se, but he's lower-class, she's way way upper-class, and therefore he's absolutely the "wrong type". Ergo, bad boy. FWIW, I wouldn't actually call him a bad boy, but I think that's the logic.

I don't think bad boy means morally bad or even morally questionable. He's a good guy but he is, you know, wrong side of the tracks, got a bit of an edge. I think that's reasonably close to bad boy.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
like doesn't bad boy just mean 'guy someone's parents don't want them to date'?

I have never heard anyone refer to him as a "bad boy" type. Not that I hang out around a lot of Disney discussions but still. Never would have labelled him as such. He's like the nicest dude ever.

To this day I can't watch Aladdin without making a face like I'm licking a lemon, because of the Tom Cruise thing. Well, that and that you've got the good guy who's basically just a white guy with a tan, and the bad guy Jafar who is...distinctly...more ethnic. It bothered me even as a kid.

And I'm probably going to be thrown out for this, but Robin Williams annoys the hell out of me.

You forgot trespassing, identity fraud, obstruction of justice, jay walking, jail-breaking, accessory to everything Abu did (even more so if he trained Abu or if Abu already had those skill sets when they hooked up), squatting, and slavery.

Also all the Prince paraphernalia is kinda sketchy. I mean were all those people magical constructs that eventually vanished? Or were they real people that were created, and if so were they compelled to follow Aladdin's orders? Did the money he was tossing to people in the streets disappear? Did a sudden influx of wealth screw with the market at all if it stayed?

Legalities aside, Aladdin is pretty clearly Chaotic Good.

[Picture is Aladdin disguised as a prince trying to court Jasmine at her balcony, from the Disney animated movie "Aladdin".]

Whenever someone refers to him as a "Bad Boy" I cringe.

So how exactly is he a Bad Boy?

Because he's fucking poor and has to steal to get food? Because he thought lying was necessary to make royalty accept him? Is it because he looks like Tom Cruise? I don't get it.

Bad boy? Street rat?

I don't buy that!
If only they checked their privilege
Would they see a poor boy? No, siree
They'd find out

Mostly the poor part, tbh, but the fact that he gets the princess WHILE being poor and scruffy and ~from the wrong side of the tracks. I suspect most of the people who say this are seeing things from Jasmine's point-of-view, where that character type is clearly established. It's the flipside of the Cinderella story and comes with certain tropes that people have unconsciously projected onto them both.

See the music video Uptown Girl for more.
