When are you part of a fandom?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm curious where people draw their lines.

I don't quite understand the question. What do you mean when? Like age, time, frequency, summer/winter?

I think they meant participation level. But I could be wrong.

I didn't even think of that? I'm more of a literal interpretation person so when=time. :/ Thanks fellow anon!

No problem! :D

Mentally/culturally/whatever? Always.
Actively... When the mood strikes.

You mean what level of participation makes me think I'm part of a fandom? If I regularly discuss the show/book/etc with other fans and read fic/search art, I'm part of a fandom. If I draw art for the fandom, I consider that to be one of my main fandoms.

When you consider yourself a part of fandom OR spend a lot of time in person or online talking about media with people who do so.

Fandom just isn't worth taking seriously. I mean, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it, but it's too nebulous a concept to really pay it much mind.

Ohhh, so going by other replies, this is more of a philosophical "When is one part of something? When does one stop being one and start being a part of many?" type of thing. So confused.

I don't know, I consider myself part of Hannibal fandom and yet I produce absolutely nothing and basically lurk. I'm still a part of it.

Same with me and my fandoms. In just about all of them, I'm part of the discussions and not much else.

When I actively chat with others in said fandom, read/write/look for/draw, and not just once in a blue moon. And reblog a lot of stuff and track relevant tags on the Tumblr side of things.

I usually lurk before jumping in. Sort of doing that right now with Metal Gear Rising.... But I think I'll stick to lurking. Meh.

When I do something other than just watch/read something by myself. Anything beyond that counts. Blogging about it, making screencaps, drawing fanart, discussing it with other people -- now I'm officially involved in fandom.

Yep, this. If I'm doing more than just watching it - even if I'm just talking about it with others - then I'm "in the fandom".

I guess when you contribute something. Discussion, fanwork, review of a fanwork... anything counts, either on or offline.

So even if you don't make anything, but - say - rec or comment on a fic, you're part of fandom. Or even if you don't really participate online but talk about the latest episode to a friend or coworker, then you're part of fandom. On the flip side, I don't know if I'd consider a 100% lurker both online and IRL part of fandom, even if they read a lot and/or looked at a bunch of art and cosplay.

There just has to be that social aspect for me; doesn't matter how it manifests as long as it's there.

Re: When are you part of a fandom?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I agree with this. I normally don't consider myself part of a fandom if I only lurk but don't participate, same with other people. For me being in fandom consists in that social ingredient that allows you to share an interest with others.

It used to be, when I first saw/read something, if I was giggling and grinning and clapping my hands and making happy little noises and babbling about it to any family member I could back into a corner I'd go on-line, make a post about it, poke my existing fannish friends to see if they were into it, and start at least 3 fics (usually something funny, something smutty, and a plotty/serious multichapter thing). In my earliest fandoms I had a few on-line buddies who'd I'd spend literally hours IM-ing with.

However, the last few years, for all the fandoms that I've found interesting ... I didn't ever find a good group to burble with. (Which could be because I've always loathed both Facebook and tumblr equally: maybe that's where all the people are no? I also tend to latch onto small fandoms: Not by choice -- I just like what I like -- but obviously not as many fans mean it's harder to find each other.)

Honestly, F!S is about as fannishly-communal as I get nowadays. I still watch and read, and I still write, but it's very solitary.

When I've bought the second book, or about the fourth episode.
