The Witcher II already sucked and was pretty much unplayable, so whatever. But the first Witcher is still pretty much one of the best games out there, so ... suck it up? The misogyny is bad, sure, but the plot and the gameplay are so much superior to pretty much any other game.

how was it unplayable?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
The PC version was a mess. It was incredibly frustrating to play and just no fun at all.

Well that's specific. A lot of the issues the game had at launch (when I played it) have been fixed. And even when I played it I found no real issues aside from the fact that my computer wasn't as powerful as it should be to play it, so I dunno what you're even getting at.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
For one you can't pause the game properly, which I personally hate. I don't remember a lot of details because it's been a while since I played it (well, half of it, I gave up at some point because I didn't enjoy it), but I remember that it took me three attempts to get through the tutorial alone, and I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to die during the tutorial. And it's not just me, I have several friends (all of whom are hardly novice gamers) who had the same issues with the game.

Ah, so when you said "unplayable" you meant it has a few small issues.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
When I say "unplayable", I mean that the gameplay makes it hard for me (and a lot of other people) to enjoy the game. I play games because they're fun. If I'm not having fun playing a game, if I have to look up tutorials online for every other fight and/or repeat every other fight five times to figure out how -exactly- I need to do something because otherwise it won't work, I don't want to play that game - even if I loved the first part, even if I love the books and the characters and really really want to like the game. If I pick the normal mode, I don't want to feel like I'm playing a game on hard. I don't know why you seem so terribly offended by this. If you enjoyed The Witcher II, that's great for you. I wish I had, too.

I'm not ~~offended~~, it's just that when someone calls a game unplayable, that's a term usually used in relation to bugs, glitches or other technical issues that can go wrong with a game, not personal preference. Hence why I was questioning what you were saying and wondering why you were calling it a "mess" because lol no it wasn't.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's less about bugs, more about the general gameplay. It feels a lot like something that just wasn't planned as a PC game, and the PC version is a mess. Sorry, but it is. Anyway, we can just agree to disagree. I don't want to convince you to hate it, you're not going to convince me that it's actually fun to play, so whatever.

wow ok

ty for agreeing

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
man you are super butthurt that someone doesn't like the same video game as you

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I found the opposite actually. The Witcher was awful with awful awkward gameplay that resulted in me not even bothering to finish it. Witcher 2 was an improvement tbqh

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's a really bad idea to discount a pretty valid criticism of any media just because it's otherwise "good".

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's a bad idea to equate "problematic in some way" with "bad". A game/book/movie can have problematic elements, but still have a good story, interesting characters, a good gameplay if it's a game etc. I think that it should be possible to criticize problematic elements in something, of course, but these probleamtic elements don't mean it's not good. Otherwise most literature from previous centuries would have to be considered terrible because it's sexist/homophobic/classist etc. by our modern standards.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
That's true, and I agree that there does need to be a kind of balance between not dismissing a game because of it's 'problematic elements', and not dismissing criticism of social issues as not reflecting anything about a game's substance.

I guess I'm just used to fandom's kneejerk reaction where criticism = automatic hate.

Only this time I also forgot that the OP was mostly taking a potshot at fandom, which I can understand because I am all about terrible schadenfreude. But still, my bad.

ayrt

I get it, a lot of the time people think that you can't possibly criticize something without hating it. Personally I think this game and the books have a huge problem with sexism, and it's bad if the fandom ignores that (IDK, I'm not in the fandom). But I still think it's one of the best games of the last years, despite its issues. Definitely better than Dragon Age, much as I like it.
