I still remember the wankfests over the forums if you sided with the elves, or something. Because "read the books, Geralt would never do that it's OOC". So why they give me that option in the first place?
Meeh I generally agree, it's a good game, just not the best thing ever. And I still take Dragon Age over it, if just for the possibility of customization of the warden/hawke... still it's sad that they decided to no longer allow player to choose a race. I understand why it's like that, but I'm still a bit bitter.

So let me get this straight. It's bad to streamline the narrative for a video game by cutting the female character. But when there is a strong female character present, she's cool but "a Mary Sue."

How the heck can she even be a Mary Sue if the author is a sexist guy (according to you, I've never read it. I don't think they're all translated?)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
She's super good at everything, but still needs ~a man~ to be complete/becomes helpless/overly depends on a man once he's around, etc?

At least, that's the only thing I can think of, but I've never read them either.

[Picture is from the videogame "The Witcher 3", a warrior is looking at a fearsome beast.]

I maliciously wish for The Witcher III to suck troll's ass just to piss off the neckbeards and make them stop yammering how The Witcher is "vastly superior" to Dragon Age.

The Witcher is an awesome game on a number of levels, true. But it's also a bigoted straight white gamer's wank fantasy with its casual homophobia, misogyny, sexism and the oh so brooding epitome of masculinity as a protagonist.

Rather than improve on Sapkowski's handling of these issues in the original books (written in the 1990's), the game developers took a step backwards by eliminating the other protagonist - a girl (a Daenerys-like Mary Sue, but a cool character nonetheless) - and making it all about Geralt's man pain and sexy witches.

I'm not a pathetic SJW all the time, I swear.

Man I played the original game and it's just like... no.

it's a really, really hard game to get into. a number of people checked it out on my recommendation but only one stuck through to finish it.

the second really improves on that front though.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-19 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Can we please stop automatically equating "cares even remotely about social issues" with "SJW"? It makes it really difficult to have any sort of nuanced discussion.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Can we retire the term SJW altogether? It kills any discussion the second it is used. It's really hard to differentiate if somebody accusing someone else of being an SJW is being asshole themselves.
Do they mean people who pretend to care about discrimination to easier abuse others? Or someone who reads way too much into insignificant things and takes offense? (because there is an objective standard to how much may be read into a thing, and what things are significant, and where offense is warranted?) Or someone who criticizes a fandom at all ever? (because fandom means always enjoying and supporting 100% of everything?) Or someone who brings up real life social dynamics in fandom? (because fandom is for escapism only?) I've seen SJW applied to all of these with equal vitriol, which is really not conductive to any discussion. Can't we go back to calling assholes assholes and telling them why they are assholes?

The Witcher II already sucked and was pretty much unplayable, so whatever. But the first Witcher is still pretty much one of the best games out there, so ... suck it up? The misogyny is bad, sure, but the plot and the gameplay are so much superior to pretty much any other game.

I found the opposite actually. The Witcher was awful with awful awkward gameplay that resulted in me not even bothering to finish it. Witcher 2 was an improvement tbqh

I think it's a really bad idea to discount a pretty valid criticism of any media just because it's otherwise "good".

I love the everloving shit out of The Witcher and I can't wait for 3 and i'll take it over Dragon Age if I had to choose, but fuck that - i'll gladly play both. Haters gonna hate.

Even if it's misogynistic, I enjoy literally everything else about these games.

Yeah, I've tried the first Witcher and it bored me to tears. In addition to some of the more offensive aspects that I saw, the combat was just not fun. I've heard it gets better in the second one, but I'll stick with Dragon Age.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
It does, actually! The combat system is a bazillion times better.

Well, aren't you mature. The series is chock-full of a lot of sj issues, I can't and won't deny that, but in almost all other ways I think it's better than Dragon Age.

I do think that I'd love to see a collaborative project between CDPR and BioWare though, they can both bring excellent but different things to the table.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. DREAM FUCKING COLLABORATION

Ciri was awesome and I wish the game was about her. I also miss the parts where people actually called Geralt out on being a brooding emo asshole :(

I consider the books to be most feminist narrative I've ever read, including books written by women, but that's just my impression. I'd love to discuss it though, because I honestly can't see the isssues you're mentioning (the books, I mean, the games are sexist as hell)

Also, wtf does Ciri have to do with Deanerys, despite both having light hair and superpowers? Literally everything else about them is different.

I have never played the games but I was literally raised on the books and I was wondering, how much did they translate into English? Last time I checked, they got around The Last Wish or something? Because the saga develops a lot of things that were just hinted in the short stories, including some social issues.

Also, even if witches look like Playboy's cover, they kinda unofficially rule the world, so yeah. And I thought that for character to be considered a Mary Sue she has to be not only very powerful, but also kinda perfect as a person? Ciri is just this annoying (but for me totally loveable) brat who doesn't know how to handle her life and abilities. How is she a Mary Sue?

I keep glancing over The Witcher games in my perusal of RPGs to try out since Dragon Age turned me on to the genre, and the second one looks particularly tempting, but the very thought of playing as Geralt, fearsomely straight and angsty man's-man that he is, makes me exhausted.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Say what you will about the social issues inherent in the games, but nothing excuses Dragon Age II being a big, steaming pile of shit whose only redeeming factor was decently written characters.

Except for Anders. Anders sucked.
