Doesn't really sound spoiled, just stressed out and missing their person. I mean does the dog act like this when it's home?

And depending on the routine at home 30mins in a crate can be killer for a dog. Not all dogs are crate trained. I'd say you're lucky the dog didn't freak out more and injure itself.

Yes, yes it does. The friend's husband actually complains about it rather frequently, but it takes two for discipline. The day before he left it here, he said he had to chase it around for 10 minutes before he could finally leash it up. It knows "come", "sit", and "stay"; it just rarely listens to them.

And it is crate trained. This is just the first time I think it's been put in a crate while there was still a human in the house. We had it in its crate like the other dogs when we went out for an evening a couple days ago and it was fine then, no bed torn up, etc. I think it just knew I was still here and revolted in protest.
