This close to murdering a dog...

[personal profile] othellia 2013-06-20 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
My sister and I have been watching a friend's dog while she's in Japan for the week and it the most spoiled brat I have ever encountered. Even now it's just pacing around the room, making little huffing noises. I give it our dog version of a stern "no" and it stops for about two minutes before resuming its pained vendetta against the world.

I put it and our two other dogs (seriously saintlike compared to this thing) in their crates for about half and hour while I took a shower today, the friend's dog would stop yapping through the whole thing and when I came back to let them out, it'd torn through its whole doggy bed, fluff EVERYWHERE.

I try to be as stern as possible with it, but its hard because you can't really punish them after the fact and I'm not even sure it realizes that its constant whining is part of the problem. Plus it's one of those "what are you really gonna do" situations since the friend will be back by Sunday and she'll just let it walk all over her again like it normally does.

Bah! *throws hands up*

Doesn't really sound spoiled, just stressed out and missing their person. I mean does the dog act like this when it's home?

And depending on the routine at home 30mins in a crate can be killer for a dog. Not all dogs are crate trained. I'd say you're lucky the dog didn't freak out more and injure itself.

Yes, yes it does. The friend's husband actually complains about it rather frequently, but it takes two for discipline. The day before he left it here, he said he had to chase it around for 10 minutes before he could finally leash it up. It knows "come", "sit", and "stay"; it just rarely listens to them.

And it is crate trained. This is just the first time I think it's been put in a crate while there was still a human in the house. We had it in its crate like the other dogs when we went out for an evening a couple days ago and it was fine then, no bed torn up, etc. I think it just knew I was still here and revolted in protest.

er, it's a dog...being in new places with new people and new dogs can be pretty distressing

I get that, and I admit that I'm still a bit of a new person even though its seen me on and off for several months now. But it's stayed here plenty of times before and it's known my sister's dogs for years. He and my sister's one dog are pretty much BFFs. And he acts this way with both me and my sister and - once again - he's known my sister for years.

So one semi-new person with two old people = yes. New place = no. New dogs = no.

I suggest telling your friend you're not willing to dog sit again. It doesn't seem like a good fit.

Yeah, the dog sounds less "spoiled," and more anxious/stressed/insufficiently stimulated. Try taking it for a walk or playing with it, rather than disciplining it for being unsettled.

Like everyone else is saying, this just sounds like garden-variety stress.

The most spoiled dog I ever encountered belonged to a middle-aged childfree couple I used to know. The wife, especially, would bristle and glare if she saw a child put a toe out of line. But at home, she would smile indulgently as she allowed her dog to jump all over visitors, bark constantly while they tried to talk to her, and grab food off the dinner table.

I've had to mind dogs before when I was housesitting and I feel your pain on the discipline issue. I just say no now, because it's my right to say no.

My last client owned one that howled and managed to dig her way out of the yard. I left for one afternoon (this was a two week job in the client's home and I needed to buy food/check my mail) and when I came back, the lady next door tried to threaten me by telling me she would call the client and tell them I was abusing the dog because she could hear how miserable it was.

She'd just never been left alone before. They'd never done any training with her to get her used to them going away and coming back. Whereas my dog doesn't get stressed even when I leave the country for months at a time. She mopes and sleeps with my sweatshirt, and after the initial "OMG YOU'RE BACK. I MISSED YOU." moment, she gives me the cold shoulder for a few days, but she knows I haven't gone away forever and left her.

That's it? It's pacing, huffing and tearing up its own belongings? That all and you're complaining?

I've looked after other people's dogs a couple times. One was an angel. One crapped all over the house (even when being let out every two hours), howled all night and tore a hole in the couch. One chased the cats inside the house (so much for those curtains) and tried to dig holes in the house plant pots.

So you've got a huffy, yappy dog that doesn't like being in a crate. It could be so much worse.
