I've had to mind dogs before when I was housesitting and I feel your pain on the discipline issue. I just say no now, because it's my right to say no.

My last client owned one that howled and managed to dig her way out of the yard. I left for one afternoon (this was a two week job in the client's home and I needed to buy food/check my mail) and when I came back, the lady next door tried to threaten me by telling me she would call the client and tell them I was abusing the dog because she could hear how miserable it was.

She'd just never been left alone before. They'd never done any training with her to get her used to them going away and coming back. Whereas my dog doesn't get stressed even when I leave the country for months at a time. She mopes and sleeps with my sweatshirt, and after the initial "OMG YOU'RE BACK. I MISSED YOU." moment, she gives me the cold shoulder for a few days, but she knows I haven't gone away forever and left her.
