High Quality Vampires

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Where are the high quality vampires at?

I loved "Blood Sucking Fiends (A Love Story)" until the third book which I just read and has bummed me out so hard. Now I want some more.

Hook me up, bros.

/lurks in thread. I'm curious too.
All I can recommend is The Saga of Darren Shan, if you haven't read it before.

I always liked Vamped by David Sosnowski. Pretty hilarious take on the vampire trope.

I can't do high quality vampires. They start buffering every ten seconds and I never make it to the bloodplay.

OP asked for high-quality vampires, not second-rate supernatural porn.

If you like high action thrillers there's The Nathaniel Cade series by Christopher Farnsworth. (So far it's, Blood Oath, The President's Vampire and Red, White, and Blood.)

If you are looking for something movie-wise there's

Midnight Son

Oh damn, you beat me. Every time anyone mentions reading something with a vampire in it, this is the book I tell them to read next. (Well, sort of tell. More sort of beg. Not enough people know about this one, I think because it's not a series and McKinley doesn't write a lot or have plans for a sequel.)

My absolute favorite vampire is Saint-Germain (http://www.chelseaquinnyarbro.net/saint-germain.html). No one else even comes close.

I enjoyed The Vampire Tapestry by Suzy McKee Charnas. One of the stories has the vampire telling a therapist all about how he hunts people, while she tries to figure out what his 'story' really says about him. It's a good twist on the genre.

Hellsing, both the manga (only ten books long) and the Ultimate OVA. Best damn vampires I have ever seen, vicious and powerful and genuinely terrifying, especially Alucard.

I saw the Swedish film Let the Right One In a couple of years ago, and loved it so much I tracked down the Englash translation of the novel the movie was based on. Great read. I found it really moving and genuinely frightening in parts.

My personal favorite is Vampire Princess Miyu. Despite the title, it's some pretty solid Japanese horror with a really fascinating vampire main character. Especially in the manga and the TV series.

I really liked "Night Road" by A.M. Jenkins (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2933271-night-road). Maybe it's not "high quality" in the traditional sense of the word, but it's much more than the generic vampire-romance that overflows the YA-section of the bookstores. I think it's a very classic and traditional YA-story, updated to the modern times, disguised as a vampire-novel.

And as far as I know, the Swedish movie "Let the right one in" is a book-adaptation. I haven't read the book, but the movie was simply perfect, so I think it would be worth to read.

I though Barbara Hambly's "Those Who Hunt the Night" was a nice vampire novel, but I'd really suggest reading it as a one shot - the sequels weren't great.

Fevre Dream by George R. R. Martin was also quite interesting.
