alcohol.

yuck. I hate the way it tastes and the way it makes me feel.

Also I hate how not liking alcohol makes people think I'm a prude or that I don't drink because of religion or that I'm trying to be "good" or some shit.

Don't worry. I am not a big alcohol drinker either. For me the brief period of being drunk doesn't outweigh awfulness of drinking (it tastes gross and burns).

I'm often asked by Japanese if I drink beer because "Germans love to drink beer and to eat bratwurst, everybody knows that" and the looks they give me when I say beer or alcohol in any from is disgusting to me.

Right there with you. I've never found anything that doesn't taste like lighter fluid, and I don't want to drink lighter fluid. I've actually never drank enough to know what being drunk feels like, because lighter fluid.

And yet you've apparently drunk enough lighter fluid to know what lighter fluid tastes like?

I was wondering if someone was going to make this facile comment. The vast majority of taste comes from smell.

Quite the opposite, actually. The reason I find alcohol so off-putting is because my sense of taste is exceptionally sensitive. I don't know why you're so personally offended that I don't like alcohol.

Wow, you really feel invested in insulting people who don't like things that you like, don't you? I'm not claiming to be "delicate and refined," just that I perceive the taste of alcohol very strongly. I'm sorry that's so ~offensive~ to you.

I love how you accuse me of being "unlikeable and snobbish" when you're attacking people for having different tastes than you. Are you one of those people who thinks that anyone who doesn't enjoy alcohol is calling you a lush?

No, honestly, I think that tasting ALL alcohol as "lighter fluid" doesn't mean you have sensitive taste: it means you have something seriously wrong with your senses. Or you're a snob who tasted one drink she didn't like and supequently tars all "icky" alcohol with the same brush. I'm thinking probably the 2nd.

There's nothing wrong with not wanting to drink alcohol. There's something wrong with branding an incrediby diverse area as universally disgusting, however. It makes you seem naive and uneducated. Drinks that contain alcohol are a ridiculously huge specturm; it's like comparing a peach to a steak. If you think a fresh New Zealand Malborough white wine with notes of apple, elderflower and redcurrant tastes like "lighter fluid", there's something very wrong with you. (or again, you're simply inexperienced. There's nothing wrong with that, but at least admit it.)

The lesson of the day is not to speak with authority about something of which it is embarrassingly obvious you are ignorant. Try broadening your horizons. I promise it won't kill you.

Listen, anon. I know what's going on here. You took umbrage to an innocuous comment and posted a snippy response; anonymity can make even nice, normal people act like assholes sometimes. The situation escalated (and part of that is my own fault, because I should know better than to feed the troll), and now you've painted yourself into a corner. You feel like you can't back down, so you're stuck defending an indefensible position and doubling down on your douchey behavior so you don't look weak.

But it's just like you said: no one else is even reading this anymore. No one is going to know about it if you take a step back, look at your comments, and admit you were wrong. You're not going to lose face with anyone, and I think you'll feel better about yourself.

same. I guess some drinks taste good, but they're no better than a regular fruity drink or whatever-- but they cost 3 times as much and make me feel horrible.

I like the way a lot of alcoholic beverages taste (drinking a really delicious beer right now), but I HATE the feeling of being tipsy like nothing else. I don't think I've ever gotten fully drunk, just because I get to tipsy, I feel really gross and it's like "YEP nope I'm done now."

Me too, to all of this. Though for me, anxiety comes into it too. Anything that messes with how I think freaks me out big time. :(

Yup. I've tasted one fruity drink that didn't disgust me but everything else I just don't seem to have the taste-buds for.

Ditto. I've never tasted any alcoholic drink that I haven't disliked. I hate how people act like there's somehow something wrong with me when everyone else is getting beers and I'm fine with a water. It's like, I'm not judging you for drinking alcohol, so don't judge me for disliking it.

Yes! I'm a teetotaler, mostly because every alcohol i've ever tasted is just nasty. NO way could i drink more than a tiny sip. Blech.

As someone who does enjoy a drink or two, I've never understood why people harass others about not drinking.

You offer them a drink, they decline with something like, "I don't like to drink, thanks," you say, "Oh, okay," and note them as a potential future DD. Maybe talk to them later, in private, to make sure they're alright with being around drinks/people drinking.

I've noticed this happens a lot with food, too. Not even talking about vegans/vegetarians, but there just seems to be this inbuilt contempt in a lot of people for others who don't eat and drink the same way they do.

Especially if someone's on a diet or is trying otherwise change their drinking habits.

It's really weird.

I'm so sorry people judge you, for real. I'm a drinker myself, and I honestly don't see how anyone can view a non-drinker as prudish. You can have just as much fun while sober, even around drunk people.

I think it just stems around the fact that alcohol loosens inhibitions, and so people are braver and bolder when drinking, and so non-drinkers tend to seem more reserved and shy in comparison.

I live in Australia, and alcohol is so much a part of our culture, it's impossible to escape. Every. single. bloody. social occasion. has alcohol. It makes me feel sorry for people who are alcoholics, because it must be SO hard to quit when it's everywhere.

I just say "I don't drink", but then people expect me to rattle off a list of reasons. And then they seem to think I'M judging THEM by not drinking???

Honestly don't even care if people drink, so why do they seem to care so much if I don't?

Me too. I can't even stand the smell of it.

What gets me is the questions: "But why don't you drink?" As if I have some elaborate explanation. Why isn't "I don't like it" or "I don't want to" enough? It's not like I'm questioning why anybody drinks, but some people seem to think that because you don't, you're looking down on them or judging them when they do.

This so much!!!

Do you also get the shit that you "just haven't tried the right drink"? When I say that I don't like the taste of alcohol they always try to vigorously persuade me to try this drink or this because "I will certainly love this one"...
