Well, tithing used to be a thing with religions as a whole, and is still a requirement for Mormons (although you could argue they're a cult as well).

I've heard those arguments and they were really, really convincing (and a little unsettling).

(This isn't to say that I would hold it against a person if they were Mormon. I try to remember that everyone has at least one *thing* that you just don't pick at and try to ruin. I know I've got mine.)
