Scientology is an actual religion now?

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2013-06-22 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure religions don't require monetary donations. I mean, passing the bowl around (I don't know what it's called; I've only been to my friend's church once) doesn't mean you have to put something in it.

Some Christian groups can be VERY insistent about tithe, to the point it's an obligation if someone wants to stay as part of the group.

...the Anglicans in my part of the world insist EVERYBODY in their church has to to take ten percent off the top. Even old age pensioners or people on social security / unemployment / income supports.

IA that the Anglicans are a cult though. :-P

that's odd. I'm not anglican myself so I can't say I know much about it, but it's just a branch of christianity, right? I've been christian since a very young age and never have I heard of a church that requires 10%. it's suggested, and sometimes churches will ask people outright to tithe, but it's never been a requirement. which is your part of the world, if you don't mind me asking?

I think you are right. That church sounds very odd and I'm sure the Archbishop of Canterbury would be horrified. The Anglicans aren't like that at all, they are pretty low key and wet most of the time.

Well, tithing used to be a thing with religions as a whole, and is still a requirement for Mormons (although you could argue they're a cult as well).

I've heard those arguments and they were really, really convincing (and a little unsettling).

(This isn't to say that I would hold it against a person if they were Mormon. I try to remember that everyone has at least one *thing* that you just don't pick at and try to ruin. I know I've got mine.)

It used to be classified as a cult in the US until the cult tracking agency was literally taken over by Scientologists. Now it's an unofficial religion.

Where I'm from there are church taxes.
