It's not a religion it's more a cult. And I think it's okay to not be tolerant of cults.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
All religions started as cults, you know.
Does that mean when Scientology is big enough one day you will tolerate them? :P

Scientology is an actual religion now?

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2013-06-22 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure religions don't require monetary donations. I mean, passing the bowl around (I don't know what it's called; I've only been to my friend's church once) doesn't mean you have to put something in it.

Some Christian groups can be VERY insistent about tithe, to the point it's an obligation if someone wants to stay as part of the group.

Well, tithing used to be a thing with religions as a whole, and is still a requirement for Mormons (although you could argue they're a cult as well).

Re: Scientology is an actual religion now?

It used to be classified as a cult in the US until the cult tracking agency was literally taken over by Scientologists. Now it's an unofficial religion.

Where I'm from there are church taxes.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
inb4 some ignorant atheist show up to bash religion and in the process makes it very clear that they don't actually know what the fuck they're talking about.

(i'm an atheist myself, btw.)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, a lot of internet atheists are just anti-Christian and don't know the difference.

NOT inb4 some jerkass using a thread about religion as a thinly-veiled excuse to bash atheists out of the blue, unfortunately.

(And no, being an atheist yourself doesn't excuse the behavior, assuming you are one.)

So what IS the difference between Scientology and other religions? Genuine question, I know fuck-all about Scientology except that it's something to stay the hell away from and to be disappointed about if I find out an actor I love is a member, but I don't actually know WHY.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
The main problem with it is that it's built around milking people for everything that they're worth financially. They have someone basically lead you through basic meditation (which feels pretty damn good, but...it'd feel good if you just taught yourself to do it, too), tell you that it's a religious experience, and then tell you that the only way to keep experiencing it is to...pay them to lead you through it some more and teach you the MYSTERRIIEEEESS. As time goes on, they demand that more and more of your assets be given over to them. They've literally bankrupted people. Also, if you want to leave, they will try to prevent you from doing so.

Well, for one thing, I don't know of any religion that wants people to sign a billion year contract. Check out Sea Org for that bit.

Also, if an actor dumps an actress because she wasn't wowed enough by him as a boyfriend, her religion doesn't normally (so far as I know) make her scrub bathroom floors with a toothbrush and dig ditches after dark. Also, a religion doesn't normally get that involved auditioning women to be that same actor's future wife.

Lookin' at you, Tom Cruise. (http://www.vanityfair.com/online/daily/2012/09/tom-cruise-scientology-marriage-katie-holmes)

Scientology is a super organized cult disguised as religion.

But great news for those who wanna join; now everybody can join! You'll never want to leave! If you're into discipline, abuse, torture, stalking, blackmail, extortion, that kinda thing... boy are you in luck! Join today and if you're a woman and you're fertile, you get a free chance at becoming Cruise's wife number 4. Men get a free t-shirt. Just, y'know, don't be gay or anything.

They're not Scientologists.

If they were, they would do anything in their power to get famous / make money. You can sigh in relief now.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
For some reason, the placement of "scientologists" all on its own is cracking me up

[Picture of an empty theather scenario.]

My favorite band isn't very well known and very independent and uninterested in marketing. I could see myself seriously supporting them, like following them across the country on tour, starting a fan website/tumblr/etc., except that I suspect they maybe be Scientologists, and if I knew for sure, I wouldn't be able to listen to them at all. Original Poster is tolerant of the beliefs of others. But not Scientologists. In Before "It's no different from any other religion".

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
While the practices of the Church of Scientology can be more than a little skeevy at times, I've never met a Scientologist that I could say I didn't like as a person. Just being into a strange religion doesn't mean they're bad people.

If I could blast a 'religion' of the surface of the earth, it would be the fucking Scientologists.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Two Scientologists tried to get me to sign up so I could make my purse less heavy and "manage my Thetan level ".
...I told them, " You don't have to worry about my Thetan level - I AM a Thetan."
The friend I was with at the time muttered something about "Pear pimples for hairy fishnuts" and we both left.
( Go Google Bloom County and Opus the Penguin for the pear phrase background.)

A+ reference!

I fought the good fight against Scientology and came to the conclusion that attacking cult members for staying with a cult is like attacking abuse victims for staying with their abusers. It's ultimately counterproductive and only drives them deeper into the clutches of their abusers. I think it's good to get information out there to make people aware and to provide support for people trying to leave, but screaming at those who have not yet woken up won't wake them up any faster.
