Then that's where we differ. I don't see it that way. Which is why the "Gen" title is a weird one, not just for the rating aspect, but for people's different definitions as to what it constitutes in a fic.

Would you mind elaborating on your definition, then?

For me, any fic whose main plot is focused on characters' romantic relationships ceases to be gen. In the type of scenario you described, I'd give a bit of extra leeway for established canon pairings since they're more likely to be treated as mere backdrop, but when it comes to non-canon pairings I view that sort of situation as essentially a romantic fantasy of sorts. Even without innuendo, 'A x B living in cozy domesticity" is still a fic about A x B as a couple.

I just don't see domestic as "romantic." It looks utterly boring irl, to me, even while being in a relationship. Domesticity is, for me, just living together, doing day to day things. That's just general things, nothing romantic about it.

If it was romantic, the couple would be flirting, or making silly euphemisms about things, or some such.

But they are still a romantic pairing, and particularly for non-canon pairings, the fic is romantically pairing them together. Domesticity is part of a romantic relationship. If they weren't dating or married and just friends living together then it'd be gen.

I don't see it that way. And I'm one of those who don't get why the fanon pairs are labeled that way, but not the canon pairs.

Just because they're paired doesn't mean it's romantic, even if they ARE in a relationship. Hell, if you make mention that character A is paired with character B, but B isn't featured at all, but said character A is still doing domestic stuff, is that considered romantic as well? No.

I have a different definition. And if fandom doesn't like it, they can go sit in their little cliquey corner and stew for all I care. Cause I don't agree. And others don't as well.

...So, to you 'gen' or 'not gen' has less to do with the focus of the story than with the characters' actions within it? If that works for you, okay, but I'd think that would be even more narrow in many ways than defining based on where the main emphasis is.

Regarding domesticity/'curtain-fic', boring is kind of subjective. The fic I've seen in this vein was was written in a highly idealized fashion, and while it may not be particularly interesting to you, the authors were clearly very invested in it as a form of relationship fantasy.
