I didn't ever think Gargoyles was particularly grimdark. Wasn't that even part of the selling pitch: "the night isn't dark and dull, it's bright and colorful"?

And in response to another commenter, I think the gun safety episode was a good one, and it was especially nice that they remembered the lesson in later episodes; Eliza started practicing stronger safe handling, but didn't ditch the gun, while Broadway understandably freaked out and started hating guns altogether.

I think you just pointed out one of the strong points of the show that made it so fantastic to watch. (I was in middle school when it originally aired.) Actions had lasting consequences. After the gun episode (which was a little hokey, even to a kid) Broadway had a lasting distaste for guns even in to later seasons. After Brooklyn was betrayed by Demona for the first time- he was forever incensed just after hearing her name. Continuity like that is (and was) hard to come by in cartoons.

On an unrelated note- I was pleasantly surprised with how well the animation held up in general. I was scared to revisit the show after X-Men TAS didn't stand the test of time, but I guess thanks to Disney- Gargoyles is pleasantly fluid and graceful.
