I am not actually sure what that is. And as a HUGE animation fan this undoubtedly means that, even by dint of my not knowing which programme it is, you aren't alone. :)

It's Gargoyles, I believe. I haven't seen that show since it originally aired, but I remember it fondly and thought it was quite dark at the time. Ah, to be young again...

Gargoyles. I keep meaning to watch it; I never caught it when it first aired.

Edit: ...Once again, I'm redundant-replier girl. Sorry -_-

Going to agree to disagree and leave it that in terms of the OP's opinion. Gargoyles is and was my favorite cartoon series, and I say this as someone who watched and enjoyed B:TAS as well.

On the other hand, if you know anything about Greg's writing, and his plans for the show, and what he was trying to do with it, and the show's back ground, it makes a lot more sense as to why it wasn't grimdark all the time every episode. As well, recall at the end of the day it is a franchise owned by Disney at a time when Disney wasn't doing things like buying out Marvel.

I'd get into my rant about why the hell aren't they publishing -more- of the Gargoyle's comic since Disney does own Marvel but that's another Fandom Secret all on its own.

I've actually been watching Batman:TAS (for the first time) with my boyfriend, and it seems like every episode I have to pause and complain about how everyone in Gotham who isn't a superhero/villain is a complete blithering moron -- especially the police force. I get that it's easier to write a genius by having everyone else around him be an idiot rather than actually having to write him as a genius, but it's distracting, and I feel like I would still find it distracting if I'd watched the show when I was younger. (Not that I'm not enjoying elements of the show, because I am... it's just frustrating that Batman and his allies seem to be the only non-villains in the city with two brain cells to rub together.)

It was a kids show, but in comparison to most it was unusually nuanced, with story arcs rather than self-contained episodes and character development over time. For me, I find the characters themselves are what's stuck with me, even though it's been years since I watched it. Machiavellian Xanatos, prickly Hudson, how Demona was both vicious and pitiable...they're memorable.

Apparently, I just missed the age train on Gargoyles. Since I was just a little too old for cartoons, I somehow COMPLETELY missed it. Like, that show was not even a blip on my radar.

I don't feel you're missing out, OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched it because of the Star Trek: the Next Generation cast is amazing. I was so sad when it ended. Since most of them did the voices, it was the next best thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't ever think Gargoyles was particularly grimdark. Wasn't that even part of the selling pitch: "the night isn't dark and dull, it's bright and colorful"?

And in response to another commenter, I think the gun safety episode was a good one, and it was especially nice that they remembered the lesson in later episodes; Eliza started practicing stronger safe handling, but didn't ditch the gun, while Broadway understandably freaked out and started hating guns altogether.

It was dark *for it's time*. You have to remember that context is really important when considering how dark/gritty/etc stuff is [particularly in popular media], and the 90's just weren't that dark. It wasn't the only dark series, but it was one of the few in the early 90's.

Also, it was produced by Disney. That's pretty dark/edgy for them.

Totally with you on this OP, B:tAS was a million times better, and watching both shows recently just hammered that home since I spent most of Gargoyles eyerolling and nitpicking. (why do none of them speak Gaelic for a start, and why do the chicks have boobies if they lay eggs?)

Didn't help that I got into World of Darkness (original, not nWoD) at the same time I was originally watching this when I was 13. Makes this show look about as dark as The Magic Roundabout.

[Picture is the main cast of the cartoon "Gargoyles".]

As long as everyone's hopping on the 90s nostalgia disappointment train... I watched this show recently after hearing so much praise for it in general, and having several friends hype it as amazing and ahead of its time.

It was... all right, I guess. Just nt nearly as dark/mature/complex as everyone was making it out to be. It's still a kids' show with simple plots and the occasional corny preaching (like the gun episode). I don't get the intense devotion it still has years later. I thought Batman: The Animated Series, while it has its own flaws, did a much better job of being something adults could stand to watch too.

Secret because apparently every Western animation fan adores this series except me.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you need to keep in mind that this was a Disney show.
When compared to other Disney material it sure was/is dark and "adult" as fuck.

I love it for the characters and the story lines. It wasn't really trying to be all grimdark, but it was more mature than the typical afternoon cartoon at the time, esp. from Disney.

I love Batman: the animated series as well. But I connected with Gargoyles a lot more.

As a cartoon-obsessed kid who was incredibly fond of and grateful to any kid-aimed show or book that didn't talk down to me while also being cool and entertaining, I say "pfffft" to you, friend. That show was groundbreaking for its time...and maybe for today, too, because I'm struggling to think of a more recent Western animated show to compare it to and all I'm coming up with is the Marvel and DC round up and maybe Avatar: The Last Airbender.

To be fair, I just tried to rewatch the Justice League animated series and was kind of disappointed by it (whereas Batman and Batman: Beyond remain the best things ever), so maybe Gargoyles won't have aged well now that I'm an adult. Heading to Netflix now to test this hypothesis.

I didn't care for it either. I thought the characters looked cool, I just didn't like the show very much.

Never watched any Batman cartoon so I can't say whether or not I agree on that point :p.

My childhood nostalgia is anime, titles such as Hokuto no Ken. I'm sorry but anything western becomes pretty forgettable compared to the East.

It was pretty groundbreaking for its time. And it didn't shy away from certain stuff, plus ditto on the consistent story-telling and the gray morality. Maybe you don't find it as good because you didn't grow with the show, imo. Back in the 90's we had a lot of colorful cartoons which followed the "a very special _______ episode" norm and then there was Gargoyles which had some consistent stuff going on. Or take X-men, which didn't shy away from certain topics. Anyway, I guess you just see a lot more darker stories in media now, but not back then.

In the early 90s to have any kind of cartoon with a continuing storyline and progressive character development, that wasn't imported from Japan was a big deal. The show dealt with themes people were not used to seeing in the medium at the time and especially not compared to the other shows it was paired with on Disney Afternoon line ups on local stations (Gummi Bears, Darkwing Duck, Tailspin all fine shows but wow then Gargoyles came on!)

Sure it's still a kids show, but it's a kids show that didn't talk down to children and dealt with themes like genocide.

I watched it on and off as a kid and I think it's held up decently well. As a kid, maybe I was just dumb or maybe a little too young to get certain things, but some episodes confused the heck out of me. The City of Stone arc in particular just made me go 'Ummmmmm......huh?'. A little too complex for a six year old brain. But others, like the episode about Merlin's Scrolls, despite being a Very Special Episode about illiteracy, I remember and still enjoy immensely.
