It was dark *for it's time*. You have to remember that context is really important when considering how dark/gritty/etc stuff is [particularly in popular media], and the 90's just weren't that dark. It wasn't the only dark series, but it was one of the few in the early 90's.

Also, it was produced by Disney. That's pretty dark/edgy for them.

Also I wouldn't even say the entire series was dark. It just had some really dark themes for a show aimed at kids.

Especially the last season.
