I think you need to keep in mind that this was a Disney show.
When compared to other Disney material it sure was/is dark and "adult" as fuck.

Also, its target demographic was 8 to 12 year old boys. Despite that it was written in a way that drew heavily from Shakespeare and world mythology. It had a huge following among high school and college aged kids, and parents who were gritting they're teeth after years of things like Barney found a show they could sit down and enjoy as well.

I understand that, it's just that the hype I heard was making it out to be actually deep and mature, not just by comparison to other 90s Disney output. I recognize why people have fond memories of it, but I just can't connect with it at all when watching it separate from its original context, as an adult.

Context is everything. For the time it really was a gamechanger. And for the record I was an adult at the time it first aired.
