Slashy fandoms without homophobia?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Alright, so maybe homophobia isn't the right word but are there any slash-oriented fandoms out there without the constant 'no homo'-ing of Sherlock? Where there's not the constant need to point out that the characters in question are definitely not a couple or make it into a joke and be all "haha, they seem gay, that's so hilarious!" about it?

Isn't that most fandoms these days? Seems like Sherlock is the odd duck. Unless you mean in canon.

If you mean where the fandom is super slashy but the canon doesn't do any of the no-homo stuff, I think Person of Interest has done a fantastic job of just having the two male main characters be super dependent on each other and in some ways really emotionally open, without there being any of that kind of "But we're not GAY" kind of stuff.

Avengers is pretty low on the no-homo, if you're into that, and very slash heavy. I'd also say Star Trek, except the new movies are awfully LOOK AT THEM IN A HETEROSEXUAL RELATIONSHIP. Other than that, I dunno--do you have any plot elements or things you might be interested in for the canon?

Assuming you're talking in canon, Person of Interest, maybe (haven't seen every ep, but I've not seen it any ep I've watched so far). Also, can't claim to have seen every ep, but Criminal Minds is slash-oriented also (not in it, but it I see it all the time).

Video games, but the Mass Effect and Dragon Age slash fandoms are mostly free of it. It does help that a significant number of LI's are canonically bi. In exchange, we just get general sexuality wank and the occasional homophobic neckbeards, so long as you stay away from the official forums.

Dangan Ronpa fanfics are also mostly free of it, but that's probably because the fandom is too busy wanking about other things.

Homestuck isn't too bad, once you filter who you follow, but fics are hit and miss.

Unfortunately, I can't think of anything else. =(

Les Mis. The main slash pairing (Enjolras/Grantaire) is actually canon (at the very least, it's one-sided canon, but some read it as requited-but-with-a-lot-of-complications.

Gunnerkrigg Court, apparently. The latest chapter made all the homophobes DRAMATICALLY QUIT. Assuming they kept their word it should be pretty great from now on.

OT Mild Gunnerkrigg Court Spoilers Ahead and all that

I hope so. This is the first time in my life I have seen people collectively so upset about cute lesbians in a comic.

I still don't fully understand why people are even upset. He'd been working that up for awhile, and it wasn't objectionable in the least.

I've always noticed that the people in the comments section (obviously not all of them) tend to be pretty dense. There are a lot of small details in Gunnerkrigg that don't seem important until later, so a few re-reads are REALLY necessary. I think for the ones who were SO DISAPPOINTED that they had to stop reading, it was a combination of poor reading comprehension and denial due to their own homophobia. And it's infuriating that they seemed to think Tom was on their side and that he was going to troll the shippers or something when...he posts femslash fanart on his tumblr, and is also not an asshole. And like you said, there was build up. And also Zimmy and Gamma.

My mind is a bit clearer than when I made my original comment, so I don't think it's quiiite what the OP was looking for, given that the fandom, while sizeable, isn't very active in creating fanworks. But the canon is one of the best in regards to how it treats gay characters and I pretty much rec it to everyone because I want more fanworks and positivity.

Sorry. I tend to ramble when I talk about Gunnerkrigg.

I cannot understand why people are upset about that.

I think the budding romance is so adorable.

Vikings is very unsubtle about the attraction between two of the main male cast members. Very easy to slash and since one has invited the other to bed with him in canon no one gives a shit if it's homo :p

Spartacus. Seasons 2-3 there is a canon gay couple. They are also the main fandom pairing.
