[Picture is Marisa Kirisame and Reimu Hakurei as deformed disembodied heads; they are characters from the Bullet Hell videogame series "Touhou".]

I like to draw fanart of bad things happening to Yukkuri. It's a great stress reliever and the fact that they're often portrayed as little shits helps. I like to read fic and comics about the subject, too.

The kicker is that I don't even like Touhou. A bunch of my friends do and that's how I learned about the whole thing. I could care less about Touhou. I only like Yukkuri stuff.

From the Touhou Wiki:

A meme involving giant, disfigured heads resembling those of Touhou characters. It originated on 2ch on October 13, 2007, when an Anon tried to make a Shift_JIS portrait of Reimu and Marisa and failed horribly. Another Anon thought the failed attempt was humorous and drew the infamous original picture (shown below right). Ever since that fateful day, yukkuri heads have dominated parts of NicoNico and made cameos in numerous other pieces of Touhou fanart. Their catchphrase "Yukkuri shiteitte ne!" (ゆっくりしていってね) literally means "Do it slowly!", but has been more loosely translated as "Take it easy!" by the English-speaking Touhou community. This remains the basis for many of the jokes centered on yukkuris.

The yukkuris can go in some interesting directions. Case in point: http://g.e-hentai.org/s/4e6d4aaa1b/476138-1

That's actually one of my favorite Yukkuri artists. His newer stuff is pretty good but hie earlier stuff like this is pretty entertaining.

I have serious issues with depictions of stuff like that. It happening to any character pretty much gives me panic attacks at BEST, but it happening to yukkuris is even worse, because they way they generally speak and act makes me see them as essentially children. So every time I see someone who delights in drawing that kind of thing, I can't help but imagine them as someone who's enthused and excited about the idea of torture-murdering children who can't defend themselves. This is more than likely not the case and is something born of my own psychological issues, unfortunately, but it's very hard to ignore and I feel bad about that.

I'm sure you're a fine person, OP, and I really want to be able to say "hey, even though you like something I don't, we can still get along", but since this is the one thing that actually bothers me and it's the only part of the fandom you like, I find it really hard to, and I'm sorry. It feels like you're just doing it out of spite, like you just want to make sure the fandom is just a little bit worse than before. "Well, I don't like this fandom, but I will draw art of horrible things happening to the characters within it!"

This is probably really overdramatic and judgmental but I really don't want to come off like that, I just felt like it might help to get this off my chest...

No, I completely understand and that's kind of why it's a secret. Depictions of actual animals or people (ESPECIALLY children) being hurt in that way do honestly upset me. Even seeing it with the baby koyukkuri can make me "egh" a little bit. With Yukkuri, they're often depicted as being entitled, demanding little shitheads who only care about themselves and given that they're essentially magical talking pastries (ones that I was kind of raised on) makes it not so bad to me.

Also, I can assure you I'm not doing it out of spite. I'm pretty neutral towards the Touhou fandom and I think a lot of the characters are pretty cute and seem pretty fun. I don't hate the characters or the fandom at all. I didn't even think Yukkuri were "official" characters and I really don't interact or show my art to the fandom at large because I know it would upset a lot of them. It's just a way to relieve stress and I don't intend to upset anyone.

You definitely don't have to feel sorry because I understand how you feel completely and, as I said, that's exactly why it's a secret. I'm sure other people feel the same and would have the same concerns.

Thanks, anon. I appreciate that.

Awww, I'd like to offer you a (virtual) hug.

I do the same thing even with characters I really like. I just like to draw blood and injuries because I find it aesthetically appealing and interesting to draw. It doesn't mean I'd ever want to see real people go through things like that. The fiction versus reality barrier in my mind's pretty sturdy.

I'm glad to hear all that, it at least puts my mind at ease a bit. When it comes to how yukkuris are depicted, well, it really depends on the artist. I mean, for every fanart or comic you can find where they're being little shits, I can probably find another one where they're simply depicted as adorable little children. One of my favorites I can never seem to find when I want it is a picture showing off little raincoats for yukkuri to keep them safe from the rain, complete with pictures of them jumping about and playing in puddles. It's so darling, and going from that to seeing them slowly, painfully murdered is...a bit of a jump.

They're also not really..."official characters", quote-unquote. I just didn't know how to refer to them. They're essentially glorified joke characters made to spew a catchphase that got popular enough to become a "thing". They've never been in any of the canon materials, to my knowledge, only fanworks, and that's part of why their "depictions" tend to vary so widely.

I'm really glad you responded and was so reasonable about the whole thing. Regardless, though, I still can't help but look at you funny just for knowing you do that sort of thing...it's just really hard to rationalize because I'm not the kind of person who deals with stress in that way, and I guess that means I can't truly understand it. Sorry about that.
