I think you are a dick for not posting it, and for getting a fan-boner over being so selfish.

The author may not have wanted it posted though?

Unpopular opinion: stories don't belong to their fan herd, they belong to their respective authors because THEY WROTE THEM. I don't care if they used already existent characters and worlds for it or not, it's still an original story.

If the author didn't want to publish it the beta would be a dick indeed to just ignore their decision and do with the fic whatever they want.

Also, there's always the chance that the author might use the ending for something else, some other fandom or pick the story up again.

If the author didn't want it posted then I think the beta should respect that.

It's not the nicest character trait to feel good about being the only one to have read the last chapter, but ultimately, it doesn't hurt anyone.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
OP has no right to post it.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's not the OPs right to post it.

They'd have been more of a dick if they HAD posted it.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't post something she wrote, since it belongs to her. It just seems...disrespectful to me.

Selfish? Yeah, probably.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Slightly OT but I HATE it when fic writers say they have the whole story finished and will post like one chapter a week, but then just quit halfway through. If it's already written than why don't you just post it!?

It drives me crazy.

Anyway, you're pretty lucky OP. I just wouldn't lord it over everyone else.

I grinned while reading this.
As long as you don't rub it into other fans faces I'd say enjoy your privileged status, OP!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Couldn't you ask the person to let you post it? Or even let you offer a summary of how it ends.

Sounds like a dickish move by that author. Of course they can do what they like but how petty to write the whole thing, get a big following then just leave everyone hanging. Totally fine to do that if you haven't written it and can't but this sounds mean.

[Picture is black text over a blank green background. The green is colored as a gradient, though.]

A while ago, I was the beta of the biggest Big Name Fan in my fandom. She sent me the last chapter to her most popular story, and shortly after, left the fandom without posting it. People are always talking about how they want to read the ending, even a couple years later... and I feel good because I'm the only one who ever will.

Secret because: Well, that's stupid, right?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
from the point of view of that fandom, you are totally a fandom supervillain, op, D:

but from the point of view of the author, i guess you are a very considerate friend/acquaintance/person

in the interest of fairness, i would ask the author if you could post the last chapter, if i were you (but then, my heart has been broken far too many a time by abandoned stories)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like the author had some kind of issue.

OK, I get being angry with a fandom sometimes, but that sounds like revenge!not posting.

I wouldn't leave a story with unposted chapters. And I've been pretty angry in fandoms sometimes. Still wouldn't *ever* do such a thing.

And wow, years ago. WHUT?

Was it a satisfying ending?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
When one of the popular authors in one of my fandoms announced that she was going to delete her LJ and her fics (they were RPF), I saved them all. People often post about wanting to read them again, but I'd never share my copies, because I know that she didn't want any record of her fics to remain online, and I respect that choice.

But, I've also never let anyone know I still have them saved. As long as OP isn't going around rubbing it in the fandom's face, I don't have a problem with that. There might have been a really good reason for the author not posting that final chapter.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Was this posted to start a debate over whether the beta has the right to share the chapter?

Ransom it to the fandom, like a supervillain.

"Give me one billion million thousand hundred twenty dollars, or the final chapter will never see the light of day!" while holding the flash drive with the only copy over a vat of acid.

I recently edited a book. An actual, published book.

There were a couple of alternate endings, and aside from the author's family, I'm the only one who ever read them. It's awesome, yes.

And I admire you for not posting that last chapter, because for whatever reason, that writer abandoned the fic. It's not your place to complete it. I totally get the restraint this takes, seriously!

You really ought to post it. It is like letters, once the author sends it to you then you can share it freely. Once it is shared, it is out there. That is what the web used to be about.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
The fandom wouldn't happen to involve a late 80s/early 90s popular children's/tween book series would it?
Because my mind went straight to a certain fic that was never complete, and I haven't gotten over the fact that I don't know how it ended.

I don't see what the big deal is - how are you supposed to feel? it's not OPs mess, they should enjoy the perks. I'm just wondering if this is about a fic I know. God, if it's HP...

I don't read WIPs anymore. It feels like a waste of time, keeping 10 unfinished plots in my head when I could be reading something complete. Good riddance.

Which fandom?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Say at least the fandom from the fic so that some of use can cross some fics out.
