Question about a problem at work.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so I'm a cashier at a food store. Been there for almost 7 months now, and everything's fine.

Except this one customer who seems to hate me for some reason. I have a feeling it might be because they think I'm younger than I am, but I'm not sure.

Basically, they talk to me like I'm dirt. They constantly demand I get someone else to open a till for them to be served, even though I'm only supposed to do that when there's a large queue of people (they normally do it when there's only two or three people in front of them). Their tone when they speak to me is always harsh and condescending, as though I don't know how to do my job. And today as I served them, they called me stupid for no reason.

My question: do you think I'm justified in going to my manager about this? They're a regular - come in three or four times a week. And they only do this to me - they joke around and are polite to the other staff.

I'm not sure if I'm overreacting. Because it upsets me every time they come in and I'm on the till. It's really stressing me out. And I've tried to ignore it, but it's just got worse. They've been like it to me for five or six weeks now. Is talking to my manager (who is lovely - I get on with them fine) something I should do in this situation?

(Note: I'm polite to them and offer the same service to them as everyone else, even when they upset me or anger me, and they are literally the only customer that treats me like this. I can't think of a single thing I may have done to provoke the dislike).

Any advice would be appreciated.

Talk to your manager. Dealing with stuff like this is their job. Tell them your problem, and worst case scenario nothing changes.

I'm not going to pretend to have had to deal with this situation. However, I'm not entirely sure what the manager can do; they're a customer, not an employee.

I do however suggest you go to the manager and ask for suggestions. Noting that the customer seems to really, really dislike you for no apparent reason might help head off any complaints they might end up making about you if they get really spiteful later on.

As a one-time assistant manager of a store, yes, definitely, talk to your manager. Granted, they may not be able to do anything, but maybe they can watch out when that person comes back into the store. My own manager once threw someone out of our store for harassing me, and warned that person not to come back.

I think it would be a good idea to at least alert them of the situation so they know that a customer is making you uncomfortable and is verbally harassing you. Plus, if the customer tries to submit any outlandish complaints against you, then your manager will know what's up

I've been both the casher and the manager in this situation and I definitely suggest you talk to your manager. They probably won't be able to little more than shield you from this customer (take over the register when this person shows up, have you go do something else, etc) but that's better than nothing.

This person called you stupid for no reason. You're not overreacting. Many people think it's acceptable to treat people in the retail industry like they're sub-human, but it's not. Talk to your manager. Tell them everything you've told us here. A good manager will defend their employees against abusive treatment by customers. I hope things improve for you.

I'd talk to the manager if only because the customer sounds like he/she is escalating his/her abuse. So, before he/she turns around and complains to the manager for something you didn't even do, because I can see that happening if they really have a bone to pick with you for whatever reason, I'd tell the manager that so and so has been abusing you and if they could be observant to this. If nothing else, you will covering yourself if the costumer tries to pull a fast one and tries to get you fired.

Talk to your manager. This person has no right to treat you this way and honestly should be told to leave.

Yeah, talk to your manager if they are the reasonable sort. They might not be able to do anything, but getting this stuff on the books can be really valuable in case this customer decides to escalate stuff further. If anything, just phrase it cleverly. Say stuff along the lines of wanting feedback on your performance cause you wanna improve etc etc. Just come across as proactive about improving your skills.

Just echoing what's already been said: even if your manager can't do anything about it, it's definitely good to let them know, if only so that they're aware of the situation in case something more happens.

I second your echoes. Talking to the manager is the best idea.

What everyone else said. Talk to your manager. Don't be like me and throw it all back in the customer's face, as fun as it can be.

I had a customer like that. She made me cry, which was mortifying but at least made everyone instantly on my side. My manager took over before i started doing more than welling up: she was like, we dont pay you enough to deal with that shit.
