Magnum Opus Dissonance

Sort of inspired by this TV Tropes article: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MagnumOpusDissonance

Have you ever read a book (or a comic or movie or video game or whatever) that is thought by many to be [insert author/director/etc. here]'s Magnum Opus and thought "this isn't that good compared to [other book/movie/etc. made by the same person]"?

It's hilarious how many people think Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" is so great when honestly his best work is Batman: Year One (by dint of being the least offensive.)

This is how I feel about Neal Stephenson. People seem to be way too obsessed with Snow Crash when it's one of his weaker novels IMO. I think Cryptonomicon, Anathem, and the Baroque Cycle are all much better than Snow Crash, at least in part because they don't combine as much ridiculous nerd obsessions into one thing. And also because I think the digressions are better integrated into the plot and not as crazy.

but of course tastes vary.

Ohhhh that's a tough one. Those are my two favorite Austen novels, but I can never decide between the two...

I thought The Prestige was a heck of a lot more complex and narrative-twisting than Inception (which I actually thought was fairly straight forward).

But most people are like OMG INCEPTION MIND BLOWN, while The Prestige is either forgotten or maybe they just never saw it? IDK.

I prefer The Prestige over Inception myself. Brilliant film.

oh good one. The Prestige is an awesome movie and I wish it didn't get overlooked so often.

I loved both tbh. Inception has a pretty big fanbase so I might mention that more, but honestly Prestige was probably just as enjoyable a movie to me.

This.

I remember watching Inception, and some of the people in the theater were confused as to what happened... now, I'm no rocket scientist, but I didn't think it was that complicated.

The Prestige, however, confused me when I first watched it, so I had to watch it again to really get it.

I thought Inception was pretty straightforward, too. But I think it was kind of unique in that the dreams actually felt like dreams, which is rare in fiction.

Re: Magnum Opus Dissonance

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I thought Inception was kind of a missed opportunity because the dreams didn't feel at all like dreams, and had built-in plot excuses for being so bland.

I don't want to say. I saw major wank about this author the other day, and one of the guys involved is right there.

Let's just say I much preferred The Difference Engine.

I really don't think this statement would generate wank. The wank was caused by anon antagonism, not just opinions about authors.

I don't know. I mean, yeah, rape joke anon was certainly a shit-stirrer, but dethtoll is... obviously very passionate about his cyber-punk, and clearly has strong opinions.

Dethtoll seems like the kind of person who is generally chill most of the time, but has one or two hot button topics. (Apparently Snow Crash is one of those topics.)

What? The Difference Engine isn't Gibson's magnum opus?

Unbreakable is much better than The Sixth Sense to me.
